Stereotactic radiosurgery is a non-invasive, non-surgical treatment option applied to tumors and lesions in difficult-to-reach or inoperable regions of the body, where dangers posed by traditional surgery are too great. The treatment delivery consists of a one-time application of multiple, highly focused beams of radiation that converge on a small area of abnormal tissue, while sparing the healthy nearby tissue. This technique is most commonly used in areas such as the brain or spinal cord.
Before treatment, you will undergo magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography (CT) scans in order to capture up-to-date information on the size and position of the tumor in your body. The images are fed into a 3-D software program to simulate anatomical structures as well as the exact shape of the tumor.
