How Does the Anticoagulation Therapy Work at Houston Methodist?

Anticoagulation therapy is designed as an ongoing care program, not a one‑time visit. You’ll work with a dedicated care team that helps manage your blood thinning therapy over time, including helping you get off medications, if that is your goal.

 

Your care team may help with:

 

  • Reviewing your medication plan and health history
  • Monitoring therapy and interpreting lab results when needed, such as international normalized ratio (INR) testing
  • Adjusting dosages when appropriate and explaining what changed and why
  • Checking for medication, supplement and dietary interactions
  • Providing guidance on how to take your medication and what to do if questions come up between visits
  • Helping you reduce or wean off of blood-thinning medications

Atrial Fibrillation

Atrial fibrillation, or AFib, is an irregular heart rhythm that increases the risk of blood clots forming in the heart. If a clot travels to the brain, it can cause a stroke. Anticoagulation therapy plays a key role in AFib management by helping reduce stroke risk.

Deep Vein Thrombosis

Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) occurs when a blood clot forms in a deep vein, most often in the leg. Symptoms may include pain, swelling or redness. Anticoagulation therapy can help prevent the clot from growing, breaking loose or causing a pulmonary embolism.

Pulmonary Embolism

Pulmonary embolism (PE) occurs when a blood clot travels to the lungs and blocks blood flow. Symptoms may include sudden shortness of breath, chest pain or a rapid heart rate. Anticoagulation therapy is typically the primary treatment because it helps prevent existing clots from growing and reduces the risk of additional clots forming. In select cases, a vascular specialist may recommend additional interventions, such as placement of an inferior vena cava (IVC) filter.

Blood Clotting Disorders

Inherited or acquired clotting disorders such as Factor V Leiden or antiphospholipid syndrome can cause blood to clot more easily than normal. Patients with these conditions may require long term anticoagulation therapy to reduce the risk of DVT, PE and other complications.
