Marilynn Kendall

Marilynn Kendall was experiencing pain when she walked, and was more frequently relying on a cane or other assistance to avoid falling. Unwilling to continue in this way, she came to see Dr. Travis Hanson .

Marilynn was an active woman and wanted to stay that way. It turns out that she was suffering from ankle arthritis, but was not interested in a fusion that might limit her movement. Instead, she talked with Dr. Hanson about having a total ankle replacement.

Fusions were once the "gold standard" to provide pain relief, but they also limit joint function. Today, a total ankle replacement preserves joint function. A total ankle replacement entails placing one metal cap on the top of the joint and one on the bottom of the joint, with a plastic spacer in between. By preserving motion, less strain is placed on the adjacent joints which results in less arthritis down the road.

Marilynn’s good health and desire to maintain an active lifestyle made her a good candidate for total ankle replacement. She says, “I'm now able to walk without a cane or assistance and hope to stay that way."
