Common Injuries for Texans Players and Fans

Our team of specialists gives you access to the latest, most advanced care — from prevention to treatment and recovery.

HAMSTRING STRAIN

The hamstring is a group of three muscles running along the back of the thigh that helps extend the hip and bend the knee.

ACL TEARS

One of the four main ligaments of the knee joint, the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) stabilizes the knee during rotational movements.

MENISCUS TEARS

The meniscus is cartilage that keeps the femur and tibia from grinding against one another, helping the knee joint to move smoothly.

FOOT, ANKLE, HAND AND WRIST FRACTURES

Fractures can range from a tiny crack in one bone to a break that runs through the bone or breaks in multiple bones.

Treatments: Applying Our Learnings

Injuries suffered by Texans players and Texans fans are often treated the same way: rest, medications, physical therapy, advanced nonsurgical treatments and, as a last result, surgery. That's because research has proven that methods used to treat professional athletes are effective for everyone else.

At Houston Methodist, Texans players and fans have access to the latest therapies, such as:

Blood flow restriction (BFR) therapy
Uses calibrated blood pressure cuffs around the upper portions of the exercising arm or leg to partially restrict blood flow. This tricks the body into feeling as if it’s performing heavy weight training, allowing patients to receive the strengthening benefits of heavy lifting without the stress to healing tissues.

Return to play assessment

A scientifically validated way to thoroughly assess whether an individual is ready to return to professional, youth or recreational sports — reducing risk of re-injury. The assessment measures an individual’s ability to accelerate and move quickly, jump, change direction and balance, as well as his or her susceptibility to fatigue.

Antigravity treadmills

The reduced impact of antigravity treadmills allows patients to train through injuries such as ACL reconstruction, MCL sprain, meniscus tear, hamstring strain and Achilles tendonitis, preventing bone loss and maintaining muscle tone.

Play Safe Platform

Through unique programs targeting moms, youth and athletic trainers, Houston Methodist and the Texans are working to improve player safety for all athletes throughout the Greater Houston area. These clinics advise on topics including concussion recognition, hydration and nutrition in preparation for the football season.
