Dr. Naples received his first academic appointment in 1979 as a Clinical Assistant Professor of Surgery/Anesthesia at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine in Columbia, South Carolina. While at the University of South Carolina, he became the Chief of the Department of Anesthesiology and Vice Chief of Cardiovascular Services of Providence Hospital, the university teaching hospital.
Dr. Naples joined the faculty at the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas shortly thereafter as an Assistant Professor of Anesthesiology. He also held staff positions as a Senior Attending Anesthesiologist and the Fondren-Brown Cardiovascular Unit Anesthesia Service Chief at Houston Methodist Hospital during that time. Dr. Naples then spent 15 years at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio as a Professor of Anesthesiology with a dual appointment as a Professor in the Division of Thoracic Surgery. He became the Chairman of the Department of Anesthesiology there in 1999. Dr. Naples returned to Houston Methodist as Chair of the Department of Anesthesiology in 2005.
Dr. Naples' research centers on anesthesia applications in heart and lung surgeries.
