Neuropathology

Houston Methodist Hospital’s Department of Pathology and Genomic Medicine’s neuropathology service provides expertise in neuropathology, the study of the pathology of brain, spinal cord, muscle, and nerve tissue. Our neuropathologists are renowned and have experience in evaluating tumors, inflammatory diseases, neurodegenerative and demyelinating diseases, cerebrovascular diseases, and neuromuscular diseases. These clinical activities are utilized for training residents in neurology, neurosurgery and pathology, and for fellows in neuropathology.

  • Surgical pathology of neurosurgical and orthopedic specimens
  • Intraoperative interpretation during neurosurgical procedures including integrated diagnosis utilizing molecular testing
  • Interpretation of brain and spinal cord tissue during autopsies
  • Interpretation of muscle and nerve specimens including electron microscopy, enzyme histochemistry and molecular diagnostics 
  • Consultation on outside materials

Research

All of the neuropathologists in the Department are involved in research activities that complement their clinical practice. Research areas include, but are not limited to, the pathology of tumors, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), Alzheimer’s disease, new biomarkers of disease and the immune response.
