Cardiovascular Pathology

The Cardiovascular Pathology Service signs out endomyocardial biopsies for the Houston Methodist Hospital and provides subspecialty consultation for cardiovascular pathology specimens. Endomyocardial biopsies from heart transplant patients are examined by routine and C4d immunostaining. In select cases, tissue is processed for immunofluorescence and C4d is evaluated by direct immunofluorescence. Biopsies where amyloid is suspected are stained by Congo Red and examined by polarization and fluorescence. Positive biopsies are submitted to the Mayo Clinic Laboratory for sub-classification. If a clinician requests electron microscopy examination, our electron microscopy laboratory processes the tissues and we provide results with a short turnaround time.
