Biography

As a native-Texan, Dr. Kain received his undergraduate degree from Texas A&M University in biomedical science.  He then matriculated to the University of Texas-Houston medical school for his medical degree.  Dr. Kain then completed his general surgery internship and Otolaryngology-head &neck surgery residency at the University of Alabama-Birmingham.  He was then selected for and completed fellowship training in head and neck surgical oncology and microvascular reconstructive surgery at the University of California-Davis.

Dr. Kain is an academic head and neck surgeon with a robust clinical practice involving treatment of benign and malignant tumors as well as performing complex craniomaxillofacial reconstructive surgery.  He serves as the director of robotic surgery for the Department of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery.  He is an active member of the Houston Methodist Neal Cancer Center and serves as the vice-chair of the hospital’s clinical trials data safety and monitoring board.

He is a board-certified otolaryngologist with fellowship training in head and neck oncology, robotic, skull base, and microvascular reconstructive surgeries.

Description of Research

Dr. Kain has a vested interest in clinical, translational, and basic-science research revolving around the improvement of head and neck cancer treatments and cancer-related rehabilitations.  He participates in clinical trials evaluating novel therapeutics for head and neck cancers through multidisciplinary involvements with the Houston Methodist Neal Cancer Center.

He has maintained a committed effort towards research aimed at developing intraoperative fluorescence applications to guide head and neck cancer surgery.   This interest developed while working in an advanced-imaging lab during residency and has continued through training and now his faculty career.

Additionally, Dr. Kain is involved in clinical outcomes research related to microvascular reconstructive plastic surgery of the head and neck.  This research strives to improve quality of life and long-term functional outcomes for patients afflicted with head and neck cancers.
