Fellows have weekly, quarterly, or monthly clinic experiences throughout the year of training.
Fellows will spend two afternoons a week in the EMG/NCV Lab learning and performing EMG/NCV under the supervision of David Rosenfield, MD , Milvia Pleitez, MD, and Ron Tintner, MD.
Fellows will spend one-half afternoon a week in the Muscle and Nerve Histopathology Lab reading nerve, skin, muscle biopsy slides under the supervision and training of Milvia Pleitez, MD and Suzanne Powell, MD.
Fellows will attend a monthly Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Clinic under the supervision of Jenny Lai, MD to evaluate and treat patients with neuromuscular disorders (SMA, dystrophy, ALS, CMT, CIDP, and post-polio).
Fellows will rotate one half day a month at the Pediatric Neuromuscular Clinic at the Shriner’s Children’s Hospital of the University of Texas HSC at Houston under the guidance of Pedro Mancias, MD to evaluate and manage a variety of neuromuscular disorders in children. Fellows will rotate two half day a month with Pedro Mancias, MD at the Hermann Professional Building of the University of Texas HSC at Houston to gain experience and training performing Pediatric EMG/NCV studies on pediatric neuromuscular cases.
The fellow will attend a quarterly Myotonic Dystrophy Multidisciplinary Clinic to evaluate and manage mytonic dystrophy patients under the supervision of Drs. Simpson and Pleitez.
Fellows will attend a monthly resident Muscular Dystrophy Association Clinic and provide supervision and teaching to neurology residents. Fellows will work along and under the supervision of Drs. Simpson and Pleitez.
Fellows will have a Fellow MDA clinic one half day weekly to treat and evaluate patients with a variety of neuromuscular disorders. Fellows will follow these patients throughout their year of training with the supervision and guidance of Drs. Simpson and/or Pleitez.
Fellows will have one half day a week dedicated to research activities throughout the year of training. Fellows will be expected to complete a research project prior to completing the program. Research can involve clinical, translational, or basic science research. The project or study can involve the study of a specific disease, diagnostic approach, pathogenesis, therapeutic advances, and epidemiological investigation. The fellow’s project must be approved by the program director at initiation of training. The fellow must have a mentor(s) that will be expected to provide guidance, supervision and evaluation of the fellow’s productivity, performance, and scholarly competence.
Fellows may also request 1-2 months elective time dedicated to research activities. Prior to graduation, it is expected that the fellow will have sufficient data to submit the work for publication and/or presentation at national or international meetings.
