Cancer is a complex disease and treatment planning requires the expertise of many clinicians from varied medical specialties. At Houston Methodist, we employ a multidisciplinary approach in the prevention, detection and treatment of cancer. The multidisciplinary approach allows for the development of a unified plan that benefits from the combined clinical and research expertise of our highly specialized physicians, researchers and other health professionals.

Our oncologists collaborate to ensure that each patient receives comprehensive and coordinated care from diagnosis to recovery. Each patient is treated according to an individualized plan that is unique to them and takes into consideration the patient’s needs and treatment goals. Each patient’s team will include the following medical specialists if they are needed:

  • Medical Oncologist
  • Radiation Oncologist
  • Surgical Oncologist
  • Pathologist
  • Radiologist

In addition to these health care specialists, a patient’s team includes a variety of therapies and support services to minimize the emotional and physical effects of a cancer diagnosis, to keep the treatment plan on course. These support services include spiritual advisors, dietitians, physical therapists, financial counselors and nurse navigators.

Radiation Oncology Referrals
The Department of Radiation Oncology offers every patient cutting-edge treatments and technology that are based on a foundation of research and evidence-based care.

Our nationally renowned physicians and dedicated staff provide radiation therapy services in a spiritual and caring environment. Advanced technologies, combined with individualized treatment plans and a multidisciplinary team approach, make the department the treatment destination of choice for cancer patients and their families.

One of the goals of our active clinical trials program at Houston Methodist is to bring new advancements from the clinical trial to patient care as quickly as possible. For example, Houston Methodist was among the first programs to introduce intensity-modulated radiation therapy as a standard of care in radiation oncology, Houston Methodist continues to develop and adopt new techniques to raise the level of patient care.

Clinical Trials
The Houston Methodist Research Institute is dedicated to conducting research and clinical trials designed to find new ways to prevent and treat illness and improve the health of our patients. We have many innovative approaches for screening, diagnosing and treating cancer. By applying the latest advances in cancer care we can offer patients the best match for their particular clinical situation. The cancer research program at Houston Methodist is one of the largest in Texas, with basic, clinical, and translational studies covering many types of cancer including breast, endometrial, genitourinary and prostate. Our goal is to make as many clinical trials available to our patients as possible. We monitor more than 840 active clinical protocols, many of which are enrolling cancer patients.

As a leading provider of cancer care, Houston Methodist is changing patients' lives — and the course of medicine worldwide — through our research and clinical trials.
