Organ Donation
In the face of tragedy, one organ donor can save up to 8 lives through organ donation, and any healthy adult can become a living kidney donor.
- More than 115,000 people in the U.S. are currently on the transplant waiting list
- 81% are waiting for kidneys and can benefit from living donors, shortening and even avoiding life-altering dialysis
- Every 10 minutes, someone is added to the national transplant waiting list
- People of all ages and races can be candidates for donation
Houston Methodist J.C. Walter Jr. Transplant Center is among the nation’s top programs and is the largest in Texas, with more than 50 years of experience providing excellent care to patients with organ failure. In 2017, Houston Methodist performed its 1,000th heart transplant, and 7,000th transplant overall, since 1963. Of these, 92 patients received a second chance at life from living donors.
Talk to your family today, and register to become an organ donor at donatelifetexas.org or directly through Houston Methodist MyChart. Patients who are at least 18 years old can register to be organ donors.
Registering through MyChart offers a simple, secure way to join the National Donate Life Registry. Because your basic information is already in your account, the process is quick and convenient. You can choose to support organ donation for transplant, research or education purposes, and your decision is kept confidential from your health care team. Your donor registration status will remain with you — even if you move outside of Texas.
