Houston Methodist is one of only a few U.S. hospital systems – and the only one in the Houston area – to achieve national Magnet® recognition for nursing excellence at all of its acute care hospitals.

This Magnet® recognition of nursing excellence from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) is the highest, most respected national honor, achieved through a rigorous review process and considered the gold standard for outstanding nursing care. Less than 10% of hospitals in the United States, just over 600 hospitals, have earned this designation.

“There are few better ways to show our community, and the nation, that we are leading medicine,” said Dr. Marc Boom, president and CEO of Houston Methodist. “Our long-term goal has been to have all of our hospitals be designated Magnet® – and now we have done it. I could not be prouder.”

Houston Methodist The Woodlands Hospital earned Magnet® status on Nov. 17, and Houston Methodist Clear Lake Hospital achieved the honor earlier in the summer. They join Houston Methodist’s flagship hospital in the Texas Medical Center, which has earned Magnet status regularly since 2002. Also Magnet-recognized are: Houston Methodist Willowbrook Hospital, Houston Methodist Baytown Hospital, Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital and Houston Methodist West Hospital.

As the largest and most prominent nursing credentialing organization in the world, ANCC evaluates the degree to which leaders transform the organization to meet changing needs, empower staff members and prepare them to face all challenges, promote exemplary professional practice, foster innovation within staff knowledge, clinical practice, and systemic improvements, and measure and evaluate quality outcomes throughout the entire organization.

“I could not be more proud of our nursing leadership and the whole team commitment to achieving Magnet® accreditation,” said Debbie Sukin, CEO of Houston Methodist The Woodlands Hospital and regional senior vice president, Houston Methodist. “I love witnessing the team’s success in achieving our vision of unparalleled. Awards and accolades are great, but they only come with a relentless focus on safety, quality, service and innovation with the patient at the heart of everything we do. We look forward to continuing our journey of nursing excellence.”

Opened just five years ago, Houston Methodist The Woodlands earned Magnet® recognition in record time, announcing the honor Nov. 17 at a staff celebration. “Patients can trust when they see the Magnet® Recognized name associated with our hospitals that there is a high caliber team of nursing professionals providing unparalleled care to all,” Sukin said.

Magnet®-recognized hospitals have better patient outcomes and patient satisfaction scores, which also helps them recruit and retain the best nurses and other health care professionals.
