CLERKSHIPS SPECIFICS FOR THE HOUSTON SITE  
Prior to starting your rotation:

• Epic access
  • Need application completed through Merlin.
  • Online orientation and Epic modules once Merlin application is completed.
  • The Registrar office sends students an e-mail with pertinent rotation information.
  • Application must be completed promptly to attend Live Epic Course once arrived in Houston.

SUB-INTERSHIP SPECIFICS

Orientation

• You will have a mini orientation the morning of your arrival with the designated resident. Please contact the chief residents by e-mail one week before your rotation begins.
• Kiely, one of the stroke nurse practitioners, also offers a 1-1.5 hour refresher course for stroke- neuro anatomy, imaging, and acute stroke management. This is optional, and you will need to reach out to her to schedule this, preferably early in your rotation.

Progress Notes Expectations

• 2-3 progress notes per day (you may see the same patient and write a note on them multiple days in a row- but consider challenging yourself). 
• You will cosign these to attending and put at the top "Medical Student Note- For Education Purposes Only".
• If you are unable to cosign attending on service, write a word doc and email to upper-level resident for review.
• You will get feedback on your notes during your rotation.
• Write notes (full consult and progress notes) per medical student note template provided in Epic – This will be shared with you at time of orientation.
• Consult/Progress Notes: Use template provided through Epic. 

• Use the same template for NCS and Stroke

• Document a thorough physical exam.
• Use resources and find literature to support your assessment and plan and provide citations - please feel free to share what you learned with everyone else on the team.

Inpatient

• 2 weeks Stroke Service, 2 weeks General Neurology Service; you can request to be on Neuromuscular service, but it is not guaranteed.

Outpatient Clinic

• You will have a total of three half day clinics likely in Movement clinic – Please reach out to Dr. Garg or Kiely by end of week 1 if you have not been assigned to a clinic.
• Please log clinic time in Canvas.

Call

• You are required to take one weekday evening call from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM [short call] and one weekend call (either Saturday or Sunday) from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
• You must contact the short call resident and the weekend resident to get their number before the day you take the call.
• On long call day, reach out to attending in the morning (~0800) to discuss plan for day. If unable to reach attending, reach out to the weekend senior resident on call.
• You are expected to independently evaluate at least one patient per call and discuss the case with the supervising resident.
• Calls must be logged onto Canvas in the Call Log section.
• Each entry in the call log should include date of call, site of call and name of supervising resident or attending.

Feedback

• You can contact Dr. Garg in Week 2 if you would like mid–rotation feedback – this will include comments from residents/attendings that you have worked with so far in the rotation.

Evaluations

• We encourage you to request evaluations from all residents (including interns), fellows or attendings you feel can provide an assessment of your capabilities and have spent enough time with you (time spent can vary from one day to 2 weeks).
• Nurse practitioners cannot fill out evaluations.

Other opportunities/resources

• Let designated residents know if you are interested in Neuro ICU rotation as we can accommodate that too.
• We also recommend observing a bedside lumbar puncture and/or fluoroscopy guided lumbar puncture during your rotation.

Emergencies

In case of any emergencies (personal/weather etc), do not hesitate to contact the designated resident at any time. If you do not receive a timely response, you may contact Kiely and then ultimately Dr Garg if needed.

If due to inclement weather or other emergencies you are unable to come in person, virtual options will be offered in terms of clinic/lectures.

• You must contact Dr. Garg (email or text) early during your second week to schedule time for midterm feedback. Midterm feedback will take place either Monday or Tuesday of week 3. OSCE details will be provided during midterm feedback sessions.
