When Should You Consider Spine Surgery?
Most back pain improves with nonsurgical treatments such as medication, physical therapy, injections and other conservative options. However, if your symptoms persist — especially pain, weakness or difficulty standing or walking — it may be time to see a spine specialist.
Spine surgery can be an effective option for certain structural conditions, including herniated or degenerative disks, spinal stenosis, fractures, deformities (like scoliosis or kyphosis), spondylolisthesis and spine instability caused by infection or tumors. Advances in minimally invasive techniques now allow for smaller incisions, less pain and faster recovery. A spine surgeon or specialist can help determine whether surgery is the right next step for your condition.
Types of Spine Surgery
Our world-class spine surgeons and spine specialists offer comprehensive treatments and advanced technology to ensure you get the safest, most effective care available. Your spine treatment plan will be informed by leading-edge research and technology, from the most innovative diagnostics, cutting-edge imaging and delicate nerve procedures to advanced robotic, minimally invasive and endoscopic surgical techniques.
After you receive an evaluation, your care team will recommend different types of back surgery and spine surgery options to suit your specific condition or health care needs. Learn more about the spine treatments we offer:
Spinal Fusion
Spinal fusion permanently joins two or more vertebrae to stop painful movement at the affected segment, using bone grafts to help the bones grow together over time. It treats degenerative disk disease, spondylolisthesis, spinal instability and deformity. HM offers the full range of fusion approaches — TLIF, ALIF and XLIF — to match each patient's anatomy and condition.
ACDF (Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion)
ACDF removes a damaged cervical disk and fuses the adjacent vertebrae to relieve nerve compression, providing pain relief to the neck and arm. It is one of the most commonly performed cervical spine procedures.
Discectomy
Discectomy removes the herniated portion of a spinal disc that is pressing on a nerve root, a common source of low back pain and leg symptoms. The minimally invasive form, microdiscectomy, is the most common surgical treatment for lumbar disk herniations.

Laminectomy
Laminectomy is a spinal decompression procedure that removes part of the vertebral arch to widen the spinal canal and relieve nerve compression from spinal stenosis. It is one of the most frequently performed types of back surgery for back and leg pain.

Laminoplasty
Laminoplasty reshapes the lamina to expand space for the spinal cord without removing it entirely, preserving neck motion in a way that cervical laminectomy does not. It is used primarily to treat cervical myelopathy.

Disk Replacement
Artificial disk replacement substitutes a damaged spinal disk with a prosthetic device designed to maintain natural motion. For appropriate candidates, it offers a motion-preserving alternative to fusion.
Foraminotomy
Foraminotomy widens the bony opening through which a spinal nerve exits the spinal canal. It relieves compression caused by bone spurs or a herniated disk and can be performed in the neck or lower back.
Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery (MISS)
Minimally invasive spine surgery (MISS) accesses the spine through small incisions using specialized instruments, including robotic and endoscopic systems. Compared to open surgery, it causes less muscle disruption, reduces blood loss, lowers the risk of blood clots and shortens recovery.
