Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome (PMOS)

Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome (PMOS), previously known as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), is the most common hormonal disorder in women of reproductive age, affecting approximately 1 in 8 women. The condition involves hormonal imbalances that can affect the ovaries, metabolism and multiple body systems.

Symptoms

  • Irregular or absent menstrual periods
  • Excess hair growth on the face, chest or abdomen (hirsutism)
  • Acne
  • Hair thinning or hair loss
  • Weight gain, particularly around the abdomen
  • Difficulty becoming pregnant
  • Mood changes, including depression and anxiety
  • Skin darkening in body folds (acanthosis nigricans)

  • Clinical evaluation based on symptoms and physical examination
  • Blood tests
  • Ultrasound

  • Hormonal medications to regulate menses and improve glucose control and symptoms
