Required Learning Experiences

Year 1 (all one month in duration, except as noted)

  • Orientation (Two weeks)
  • Foundations in Direct Patient Care
  • Cardiology
  • Critical Care
  • Drug Information
  • Emergency Medicine
  • Infectious Diseases
  • Internal Medicine
  • Medication Safety
  • Pharmacy Administration and Project Management

There are two selective clinical learning experiences where, depending on availability at the time, the resident will be assigned to Continuity of Care, Internal Medicine II, Neurology or Solid Organ Transplant.


Year 2 (all one month in duration, except as noted)

  • Orientation/Intro to Pharmacy Informatics and Epic Willow Certification
  • Clinical Decision Support (Two months)
  • Informatics of Medication Dispensing, Distribution, and Administration (Two months)
  • Informatics of Medication Prescribing and Preparation (Two months)
  • Medication Safety II
  • Medication Utilization, Analytics and DB management
  • Pharmacy Administration and Project Management
  • Oncology and Research Informatics
  • Supply Chain management, 340B Program, and Billing 

Elective Learning Experiences
Electives may be selected from, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Advanced Informatics Project Management
  • Advanced Reporting and Analytics 
  • Ambulatory Pharmacy Informatics
  • Clinical Services Management
  • Contract Management/Purchasing
  • Database Management and Programming
  • Formulary Management
  • Hospital Administration

Longitudinal experiences
Each resident is required to complete longitudinal activities in

  • Informatics on call responsibilities
  • Informatics quality process improvement initiatives
  • Revision of policies and procedures

Staffing

  • Clinical staffing every third weekend during Year 1
  • Operational staffing every third weekend during Year 2
  • One evening shift every two weeks averaged over a four week period starting Year 1
  • Pharmacy Informatics on-call for 1 week every 10 weeks starting Year 2
  • Resident will work two holidays
     

Presentation opportunities (each year of program)

  • Poster presentation at Vizient Pharmacy Network Meeting
  • Platform presentation at Midwest Pharmacy Residents Conference
  • One hour ACPE-accredited continuing education program

Projects

  • The resident will complete a major research project with the guidance of a preceptor for each year of the residency. The manuscript from this project must be in publishable form by the end of the residency year. The resident will also plan and design a major research project for the next year’s residency class in collaboration with a preceptor.
  • A quality improvement project is also required which is often a Medication Use Evaluation
