Discography

Houston Methodist spine specialists are leaders in the diagnosis and treatment of chronic back pain. Discography, also known as a discogram, is an X-ray guided diagnostic procedure used to pinpoint specific sources of pain in the spine. Discography can confirm and detail the findings on a CT or MRI scan, determining exactly which disks are causing your pain.

We conduct this minimally invasive procedure to determine if one or more disks in your spine are the source of your pain. We inject contrast dye and use imaging to observe your pain response.

Your health care provider may use discography as part of your personalized treatment plan, particularly when preparing for surgery, such as lumbar spinal fusion or other surgery. Although it is used most often in the lower back, discography can also be performed in the neck or upper back as well.

Not everyone with back pain needs a discogram. Most mild back pain can heal on its own with nonprescription medication and rest. If we recommend discography, we will talk with you about what to expect before, during and after the procedure to help you feel more comfortable and informed. We’re here to support you every step of the way, from diagnosis through treatment and recovery.
