Dr. John W. Shuck joins Houston Methodist Institute of Reconstructive Surgery at Willowbrook
John W. Shuck, MD, a plastic and reconstructive surgeon, recently joined Houston Methodist Institute of Reconstructive Surgery at Willowbrook.
Shuck received his medical degree at the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. He completed his internship in general surgery and his residency in plastic and reconstructive surgery at Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, D.C. He completed his fellowship in reconstructive microsurgery at The University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center.
According to Shuck, in reconstructive surgery every incision should be exact. “With every operation, you’re striving for true perfection,” he said. Shuck elected to complete an additional year of fellowship training in microsurgery, which enables him to perform extremely intricate reconstructions.
“Microsurgery involves tissue transplantation from elsewhere on the body and reconnection of the tiny blood vessels, nerves, bones and tendons as a major component of that,” said Shuck. “It’s a very fine surgery done under a microscope. Although it’s technically difficult, microvascular surgery is my first and biggest love in plastic surgery.”
"Microsurgery allows us to do microvascular reconstruction, which can be used all over the body,” said Shuck. “So much of reconstructive plastic surgery requires a transfer of healthy skin using local tissue. But there are a lot of areas on the body where there isn’t enough healthy tissue to cover an area so we have to take it from somewhere else on the body. That’s when the microvascular tissue transfers come into play.”
Having trained extensively in the field, Shuck also performs the full spectrum of facial and body cosmetic surgery.
Shuck’s clinical expertise includes:
Reconstructive Surgery
- Abdominal wall reconstruction
- Breast reconstruction
- Head and neck cancer reconstruction
- Lower extremity reconstruction
- Lymphedema surgery
- Skin cancer/Mohs reconstruction
Aesthetic Surgery
- Abdominoplasty
- Body contouring
- Breast augmentation/lift
- Facelift
- Fat grafting
- Liposuction
- Rhinoplasty
“My job as a plastic surgeon is very personal to me. I pour my life into it,” said Shuck. “My highest priority is doing the right thing to help people and make them happy with the results.”
