Houston Methodist Division of Thoracic Surgery

The Houston Methodist Division of Thoracic Surgery is recognized as a leader in the surgical management of non-cardiac thoracic conditions. Our team demonstrates expertise not only in the development of individualized treatment plans but also in the technical precision required to perform procedures including lung transplant, complex lung resections, esophageal tumors and foregut disorders, mediastinal and chest wall tumors, tracheal and airway surgery and diaphragm disorders. Utilizing the latest scientific advancements, including robotic-assisted techniques, our surgeons strive to minimize invasiveness, optimize patient outcomes and reduce recovery times.

Our division collaborates with leading Houston Methodist centers and programs including the Lynda K. and David M. Underwood Center for Digestive Health, the Houston Methodist Neal Cancer Center, the Houston Methodist J.C. Walter Jr. Transplant Center and the Methodist DeBakey Heart & Vascular Center. Houston Methodist is a recognized leader in these areas, ranked No. 7 in the nation for Gastroenterology & GI Surgery, ranked No. 19 in the nation for Cancer Care and ranked No. 14 in the nation for Cardiology, Heart & Vascular Surgery by U.S. News & World Report. Houston Methodist is also ranked Best in Texas and named one of the nation’s best as a nationally ranked Honor Roll hospital by U.S. News & World Report

Houston Methodist is also a recognized leader in lung cancer surgery, ranked No. 8 in the nation by U.S. News & World Report for Pulmonology and Lung Surgery. Our lung cancer surgery program is part of a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach that integrates advanced surgical techniques, cutting edge research and patient-centered care.

We work closely with colleagues in our nationally recognized lung cancer program to manage complex cases, consistently delivering among the best length-of-stay outcomes in the country. Our adoption of robotic-assisted lung cancer surgery enables many patients to return home the next day with less pain and faster recovery. We have also developed advanced expertise in managing and treating lung nodules and are able to non-invasively remove many early cancers.

Our program represents a deliberate and strategic investment in our patients, clinicians, researchers and educators. Housed within a state-of-the-art hospital, our thoracic surgical facilities feature two dedicated operating rooms equipped with the latest advancements including surgical robots, robotic bronchoscopy and other cutting-edge technologies. These facilities are designed to support excellence in patient care, innovation and education.

Our Team

Our nationally renowned thoracic surgeons specialize in non-cardiac chest surgeries, including procedures involving the airway, lungs, pleura, diaphragm, esophagus, chest wall and mediastinum. We emphasize minimally invasive robotic-assisted treatment that enhance patient outcomes by reducing risk, minimizing pain and scarring and accelerating recovery.

Our surgeons are deeply committed to the education of residents and fellows, providing a comprehensive learning experience that extends beyond the operating room.  Educational opportunities include patient-based learning in the clinic, weekly division conferences, thoracic tumor board, suspicious lung nodule conference, general surgery mobility and mortality conferences, general surgery grand rounds, thoracic lecture series and gastrointestinal conferences. These activities collectively strengthen the cognitive foundation of thoracic surgery and foster ongoing professional development.

As leaders in the field, our experts frequently present at national meetings and maintain active membership in professional societies, including the American Association for Thoracic Surgery, the Southern Thoracic Surgical Association, the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, and the American College of Surgeons.  This level of engagement reflects our enduring commitment to advancing thoracic surgery through education, collaboration, and professional leadership.

Our Research

We are proud to collaborate with The Bookout Center, one of the largest and most comprehensive surgical education and research facilities in the world.

Our physicians regularly publish peer-reviewed papers and conduct work in promising clinical trials for novel treatment options that will benefit patients around the world. This research guides us in providing the best possible clinical outcomes and ongoing advancements in thoracic surgery.

With our recent collaboration with the Houston Methodist – Rice Digital Health Institute, we are translating innovative ideas into scalable solutions, with a focus on research and development in digital health.
GERDing Against Poor Lung Transplant Outcomes
Houston Methodist researchers, led by Min Peter Kim, MD and Ray Chiara, MD, determine whether enhanced recovery after a robotic-assisted surgery program could mitigate the increased risk of GERD in lung transplant patients.
Innovative Esophageal Lengthening Surgical Technique in Giant Hiatal Hernia Repair
Robot-assisted laparoscopic giant hiatal hernia repair avoids the need for Collis gastroplasty and provides symptomatic relief in patients.
Enhanced Recovery After Lung Cancer Surgery
The risk of surgical complications in patients with a history of lung transplant may be mitigated by the combination of ERAS and minimally invasive surgery such as robot-assisted surgery.
Surgical Resection of a Single Colorectal Lung Metastasis Is Associated With Best Survival
Surgical resection of a single metastatic colon cancer in the lung after resection of the primary tumor is associated with improved survival.

Education & Training

We are committed to guiding motivated and talented surgeons to become future leaders in surgery. Our faculty, recognized with honors such as the Excellence in Teaching and the Golden Apple Teaching Award, are passionate educators dedicated to helping future generations achieve excellence in the field.

Our division has developed a robust video-based learning program focused on the use of robotic technology, significantly enhancing the operative experience for general surgery residents and fellows. The curriculum features narrated recording of thoracic procedures, highlighting key operative steps across a variety of cases.

This structured, video-based approach has been shown to increase resident engagement and participation in robot-assisted thoracic surgery. Additionally, the ability to review resident and fellow-performed cases allows for meaningful reflection and targeted improvement in surgical technique.

Education at all levels is central to our division’s mission. We provide internships and shadowing opportunities for local high school and university students, along with participation in the summer Fields Rosenberg Summer Surgical Fellowship and the Kadoorie Cardiovascular Internship for exceptional college students with interest in medical careers.

Residents from general surgery, vascular surgery and plastic surgery programs rotate on our service, gaining valuable thoracic surgery experience.  We also co-direct the highly competitive Thoracic Surgery Fellowship, whose graduates consistently secure prestigious positions and are recognized for their surgical excellence.

2024 Summer Internships at Houston Methodist Saw Record Applicants
Seven hundred fifty-four applications from 113 institutions were submitted from around the country for internships in several programs, such as the Fields Rosenberg Surgical Fellowship.
