Houston Methodist Division of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery

Our Team

Our board-certified oral and maxillofacial surgeons are nationally and internationally known for their clinical innovation, developing advanced technologies and practices adopted across the field. .

In the clinic, our providers perform routine treatment such as dental procedures prior to surgery or cancer therapies. They are also experienced in assessing and treating patients with jaw deformities, obstructive sleep apnea and congenital conditions of the head and face, including cleft lip and palate. Our faculty and clinicians prioritize the study and education of advanced oral and maxillofacial treatment.

Our Research

Many of the division’s researchers, faculty and students conduct work at the Surgical Planning Laboratory (SPL), a clinically oriented computer science laboratory at the Houston Methodist Research Institute. Here, our team uses various types of medical images to perform segmentation, create 3D models, simulate surgical operation and predict surgical outcomes.

Technology Transforms Facial Surgery
Novel medical technology for craniomaxillofacial surgery, AnatomicAligner, receives FDA clearance for market.
Attention for Facial Appearance Simulation
Results on patients with jaw deformities show improved computational efficiency over FEM-based method with comparable facial change prediction accuracy.
Mandibular Distraction Osteogenesis: In Silico Study
The best attainable outcomes of mandibular distraction osteogenesis were evaluated in silico, given constraints of linear, circular and helical motion.
Surgical Planning Using the SkullEngine
Clinical feasibility of deep learning-based automatic head CBCT image segmentation and landmark detection in computer-aided surgical simulation for orthognathic surgery.

Education & Training

Our team is proud to leverage its 70-plus-year affiliation with the University of Texas Health Science Center Dental School. Houston Methodist offers a fellowship in Advanced Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, emphasizing orthognathic surgery, TMJ surgery, craniofacial surgery, trauma reconstruction and implant surgery.

The fellowship also includes learning the latest advances in virtual surgical planning and provides opportunities for meaningful research in orthognathic surgery, TMJ surgery, craniofacial surgery, trauma reconstruction and implant surgery. Our team invites fellows from around the world, including students and researchers from Asia, Brazil, Taiwan, China and beyond.
