The Houston Methodist Bridge to Medicine & Research Program offers immersive clinical and research experience that will bolster MCAT and graduate research program readiness, help participants create stronger medical school and master's/doctoral program applications and prepare for the next level in their academic and professional journey.

Target Audience

• Pre-medical students preparing for MCAT

• Post-baccalaureate students planning for graduate school and MD/PhD programs

• Career pivot STEM graduates seeking clinical/research exposure

Program Type

Hybrid (Clinical + Research + Professional Development); Part-time (20 hrs. p/wk.)

Compensation Model

 Paid stipend or hourly appointment

Key Benefits (Core Outcomes)

 

By the end of the program, scholars will:

 

  • Demonstrate documented clinical exposure
  • Complete at least one supervised research or quality project
  • Receive MCAT and graduate program application coaching
  • Draft professional reference letters
  • Present a capstone poster or oral presentation

  • Provide hands-on clinical and research experience in a world-class academic medical center

  • Strengthen MCAT readiness and graduate research program readiness
  • Build competitive applications for medical school and master’s/doctoral programs
  • Expand equitable access to high-impact medical careers

Program Requirements

Applicants must demonstrate alignment with one of the following:

  • Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry
  • Engineering (biomedical, chemical, mechanical, etc.)
  • Computer Science, Data Science, Bioinformatics
  • Public Health, Neuroscience, Psychology (research focused)

Research Readiness

Prior research experience preferred, not required. Ability to articulate:

  • Interest in research
  • Willingness to learn
  • Understanding that research involves ambiguity and failure

Examples of Areas of Interest

  • Lab work, capstone projects
  • Clinical research exposure
  • Independent or course-based research
  • Strong interest and clear motivation (for beginners)

Application Requirements

  • Minimum GPA: 3.0 (based on a 4.0 grading scale)
  • Personal statement/statement of purpose (500 to 1,000 words) that demonstrates maturity, reflection and mission by covering:
    Your Academic Journey
    Why Research Matters to You?
    How this program, institution and environment will help you achieve your career goals?
  • Short Reflection (300-500 words) that discusses why you are pursuing a gap year at an academic medical center at this point in your career? How will this experience prepare you for the next step in your academic or professional journey? 

 

Transcripts and References

  • A copy of your official or unofficial academic transcript
  • Two reference/recommendation letters. One must be academic (i.e. teacher, adviser), the other from an employer (current or former), counselor or mentor you have known for at least six months who is not a relative
