Sports Physical Therapy Residency - Houston Methodist Sugar Land

Sports Physical Therapy Residency
Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital Sports Physical Therapy Residency exists to provide physical therapists the opportunity to become advanced practitioners in sports physical therapy, who will continue to contribute to the local and professional community through excellence in evidence-based clinical practice and clinical education. Graduates will become community leaders in sports rehabilitation, while exemplifying the Houston Methodist’s I CARE values of integrity, compassion, accountability, respect and excellence, and supporting the visions of the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA).

Overview

The Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital Sports Physical Therapy Residency is a 12-month program of intense clinical and didactic experiences in a hospital-based outpatient facility focused specifically in sports rehabilitation. As part of the clinical portion of the residency, residents will receive one-on-one mentoring from board-certified specialists in sports, as well as fellowship-trained manual therapists. Residents will also carry a full patient case load to allow independent development of skills acquired throughout the curriculum.

Residents will be exposed to opportunities in the didactic portion of the program that will help significantly advance their skills in the areas of sports rehabilitation and return to activity, acute injury management, injury prevention, athlete performance enhancement, managing the specialty athlete, evidence-based practice, and clinical research. In addition to the clinical and didactic portions, residents will have the opportunity to shadow leading orthopedic sports medicine physicians in the operating room; participate in live on-field experiences with certified athletic trainers, physicians, and physical therapists; work with athletes of all ages and skill levels; and mentor new residents. By the completion of the program, residents will be prepared to sit for the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialists (ABPTS) sports-certified specialist examination.
