Allied Health Education

Houston Methodist’s Allied Health Education programs bring to life some of the most advanced leading research, modalities and treatments in practice around the world. As part of an interdisciplinary team, our Allied Health professionals provide education for future leaders in medicine. Below are the Allied Health Education programs available at Houston Methodist.

Physical Therapy Education
As consultants to professional, collegiate, high school and little league teams, in addition to performing artists, Houston Methodist is a leader in providing our community with outstanding physical therapy services. Our physical therapy education residents and fellows receive the encouragement, the hands-on experience and the knowledge to become the next leaders in the field. We offer an Acute Care Physical Therapy Residency, an Orthopedic Physical Therapy Residency, a Sports Physical Therapy Residency and an Athletic Training Residency.

Hand Therapy Residency
The Houston Methodist Hand Therapy Residency program is a 12 month program for occupational therapists ready to advance their professional growth in the focused area of hand therapy. The program is an approved residency program by the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA) and it strongly emphasizes mentoring, didactic education, and refinement of clinical reasoning skills in an outpatient hand therapy setting. Upon successful completion of the program, occupational therapists qualify to submit a professional portfolio to AOTA for board certification in physical rehabilitation (BCPR).

Medical Laboratory Science Education Program
Houston Methodist’s Medical Laboratory Science Education Program provides superior education and provides medical laboratory scientists and medical technologists with the knowledge, skills and attitudes required of professionals and leaders in health care. This 12-month professional course of study is fully accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS). Upon successful completion of this course of study, you will qualify for the examination and certification by the board of certification of the American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP).

Acute Care Occupational Therapy Fellowship
The Acute Occupational Therapy Fellowship Program is a 1-year, post-graduate program focusing on advancing OT knowledge and skills in the acute setting with clinical mentoring and didactic experiences.  Additional information on the program’s mission, overview, and goals available on the link above. Practitioners new to the profession or with several years of experience are encouraged to apply. Eligibility requirements are listed below:

• Passing score on the NBCOT
• In process of completing or plan to complete Texas licensure

Preferred qualifications include some experience in Acute Care and AOTA membership.
