Houston Methodist Division of Nephrology

The Houston Methodist Division of Nephrology utilizes a multidisciplinary approach to the care of kidney disease. Known for their clinical excellence, our nephrologists provide advanced solutions for all patients.

The Houston Methodist J.C. Walter Jr. Transplant Center is one of the nation’s largest and longest standing transplant programs performing nearly 300 kidney transplants per year. Houston Methodist Hospital is rated as high performing in the treatment of kidney failure by U.S. News & World Report.

Our nephrologists lead by example, demanding of ourselves the highest quality medicine. Our team furthers the field of renal medicine with superior clinical care, groundbreaking renal research and education for the next generation of kidney specialists.

As a translational division, our work integrates research into clinical practice and education, while clinical experiences refine our research.

Our Team

The faculty in the Division of Nephrology bring a wealth of expertise in nephrology, dialysis, transplant care, clinical leadership and research. Through recent increases in appointment availability and expanding clinical staff, we ensure timely and efficient care for all patients.

Our community involvement is extensive, from nephrology care at Legacy Community Health to local outreach providing education on the prevention and management of kidney disease and hypertension.

Our Research

Our translational research focuses on improving protocols and pathways to the best possible patient outcomes and offering patients access to the latest innovations and treatments. Our physicians closely collaborate in multiple research protocols with the J.C. Walter Jr. Transplant Center, studying novel therapies for prevention and treatment of rejection and improving outcomes.
Association of Chronic Kidney Disease With Postoperative Outcomes
This national surgical quality improvement program (NSQIP) multi-specialty surgical cohort analysis is a population-based study that demonstrates the negative impact of CKD on operative outcomes across a diverse range of procedures and patients.
Combination Treatment With Verinurad and Allopurinol in CKD
This randomized placebo and active controlled trial shows Verinurad in combination with allopurinol did not decrease UACR or eGFR decline, but a further reduced serum urate compared with allopurinol alone or placebo.
Individualized Risk of CKD Progression Among US Adults
Assessment of the individual's absolute risk of CKD progression allowed further risk stratification of patients with CKD and identified individuals without CKD, as currently defined, who were at high risk of CKD progression.

Education & Training

Our dedication to ongoing education within our division advances our clinical practice. Our Nephrology Fellowship is a two-year program offering ACGME accreditation in general nephrology. Fellows help treat patients with complex diseases and diverse pathology, gaining clinical expertise in all areas of nephrology.

The Transplant Nephrology Fellowship provides fellows with opportunities to be integrally involved with kidney transplantation. This one-year fellowship includes assessment of candidates, peri-operative management and postoperative longitudinal care. Fellows also gain exposure to transplant infectious disease, living donor evaluation, transplant immunology and multi-organ transplant care.

We extend our educational reach to internal medicine residents and provide lectures to critical care fellows and surgical residents, along with providing citywide monthly renal grand rounds. Our fellows present at major conferences such as American Society of Nephrology Kidney Week and the American Transplant Congress.
