About Dr. Melissa Arief

Dr. Melissa S. Arief is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon with a subspecialty certificate in surgery of the hand. Prior to joining the Houston Methodist team, she was the chief of surgery at Baylor St. Luke’s The Vintage Hospital. Dr. Arief originally moved to Houston to join KSF Orthopaedics and quickly built a busy practice providing specialty care in hand, wrist, and elbow surgery for both The Woodlands and Northwest Houston area.
Dr. Arief was born and raised in New Jersey. She graduated with general and departmental honors from Vassar College, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in biochemistry. Dr. Arief then earned a combined Medical Doctorate (MD) and Master of Health Science (MHS) degree, specializing in translational research at Yale School of Medicine in New Haven, Connecticut. Dr. Arief completed her residency at the State University of New York (SUNY) Downstate Health Sciences University in Brooklyn, New York. While attending SUNY Downstate she presented numerous papers at annual meetings of the American Society for Surgery of the Hand (ASSH), American Academy of Hand Surgery (AAHS), and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery (AAOS). She received multiple awards for her work including the honor of presenting the top paper at the ASSH Meeting in San Francisco in 2014. She continued her education by completing a fellowship in hand and upper extremity surgery at The Philadelphia Hand Center, which is affiliated with Thomas Jefferson University, where she trained with world-renowned hand surgeons in all the latest surgical procedures and techniques.
Dr. Arief is an active member of the American Society of Surgery of the Hand. She enjoys both continuing her education and teaching at the annual meeting. She actively coordinates and plans events specifically to encourage and support women in hand surgery.
