Aarthi Ram, MD, has joined Houston Methodist Neurological Institute at Houston Methodist Willowbrook Hospital. Dr. Ram graduated with honors from Tufts University where she majored in biology and biomedical engineering and minored in child development. She went on to receive her medical degree from the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. Dr. Ram completed her Neurology residency at Baylor College of Medicine. Additionally, she completed multiple fellowships including a Neurophysiology fellowship at Baylor College of Medicine and a Sleep Medicine fellowship at the University of Texas Health Science Center McGovern Medical School in Houston.

Dr. Ram is trained in all aspects of general neurological disorders and has specialized training in sleep medicine and epilepsy.

“Sleep medicine and neurology are inextricably linked to each other,” said Dr. Aarthi Ram, neurologist, Houston Methodist Neurological Institute at Houston Methodist Willowbrook Hospital.

“Sleep is really important for adults with neurological disorders. There is a large overlap with sleep and many neurological diseases such as Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, dementia and cognitive impairment,” said Ram. “A lot of times, especially in patients with epilepsy, insufficient sleep can actually worsen their neurologic disorder, often causing patients to have a more seizures.”

Dr. Ram is affiliated with the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, the American Academy of Neurology, the Southern Sleep Society, and the American Epilepsy Society.

Dr. Ram is especially passionate about sleep medicine in the young, stating “Sleep is not only important for adults, but children as well. It’s very important that children get enough sleep because these are critical years when their brain is growing, and an insufficient amount of sleep can often cause detrimental effects on their development.”
