February 2015- Klasek submits to ISHLT newsletter
Current PGY1-International Graduate resident Robin Klasek is already getting his feet wet with scientifc writing. Together with SOT clinical specialist Kyle Dawson, we can now view their invited submission to ISHLT's global monthly newsletter. "Pharmacotherapy Considerations for Agents Used in the Treatment of Non-Tuberculosis Mycobacterial Infections in Cardiothoracic Transplant Recipients" is in the Pharmacy & Pharmacology section of the February 2015 issue.
January 2015- El Rahi to be published in Pharmacotherapy
It's a great start to a new year for former PGY1 International Graduate resident- Cynthia El Rahi. What began as an interesting patient on her Internal Medicine rotation, will soon be a publication in Pharmacotherapy. She has received the news that "Successful Use of N-Acetylcysteine to Treat Severe Hepatic Injury Caused by a Dietary Fitness Supplement" will make its way to an upcoming issue.
December 2014- Thomas to be published in Hospital Pharmacy
Former PGY1 and current PGY2 Critical Care resident Julin Thomas received great news over the holidays. Her major project from her PGY1 year was accepted for publication in Hospital Pharmacy. Be on the lookout for "Descriptive analysis of patient readmissions within 60 days due to medication-related events" online or in print!
November 2014- Tamborello becomes Board certified
Former PGY1 and current PGY2 Internal Medicine resident Jessica Tamborello is officially now Jessica Tamborello, Pharm.D., BCPS. Congrats to her achievement so early on in her career!
November 2014- Thompson-Moore to be published in Clinical Applied Thrombosis/Hemostasis
Former PGY2 and PGY2 Internal Medicine resident Nathan Thompson-Moore has received laudable news that his research was accepted for publication. "Evaluation and Pharmacokinetics of Treatment-Dose Enoxaparin in Hospitalized Patients with Morbid Obesity" was a prospective major project during his PGY2 year. We look forward to seeing the article in print!
October 2014- George has abstract acceptance at the SCCM Congress
Former PGY1 and PGY2 Critical Care resident Jessica George will be representing her work from her PGY2 year at the SCCM Critical Care Congress in Phoenix, AZ. "Inhaled nitric oxide versus inhaled epoprostenol for the acute management of pulmonary hypertension in critically ill patients" will be the poster she will be showcasing in January 2015.
October 2014- Kwak to be published in Journal of Pharmacy Practice
Former PGY1- International Graduate resident Amy Kwak received news after returning to South Korea that her research during her residency year will be published in an upcoming issue of the Journal of Pharmacy Practice. We look forward to reading "Validity and reliability of a systematic database search strategy to identify publications resulting from pharmacy residency research projects" in print form!
September 2014- Dawson to take over the reins of the PGY2 Solid Organ Transplant Program Director
Former PGY1 and PGY2 Solid Organ Transplant resident and current Solid Organ Transplant clinical specialist- Kyle Dawson will slowly assume the role as RPD of the PGY2 Solid Organ Transplant residency. He is replacing Samir Patel who started the residency program in 2008 and will continue to pursue other research and clinical interests in his role as a Solid Organ Transplant clinical specialist. Both remain dedicated to supporting the continued success of this residency program and ensuring a smooth transition.
August 2014- McDaneld's work published and selected for Society of ID Pharmacists Paper of the Year
Former PGY1 and PGY2 Infectious Diseases resident Patrick McDaneld is reaping the rewards from a stellar PGY1 project. The culmination of this became "In vitro assessment and multicenter cohort study of comparative nephrotoxicity rates associated with colistimethate versus polymixin B therapy" and was published in the May 2014 issue of Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy. We have just received news that it was also selected as the 2013-2014 Infectious Diseases Pharmacotherapy Paper Award. Congrats to Pat and all involved in this success!
August 2014- PGY1 International Graduate Residency recommended for preliminary accreditation
On August 13-14, ASHP conducted a survey of the new PGY1 International Graduate residency to review its candidacy for residency accreditation. Setting accreditation history, the survey was conducted through web-cam and online conferencing for the 2 day review due to HMH's positive and longstanding accreditation history. HMH is pleased to be recommended for preliminary accreditation and awaits the formal decision after the March 2015 Commission on Credentialing meeting.
July 2014- Kuten's PGY1 major project to be published
Former PGY2 Solid Organ Transplant resident (and PGY1 Pharmacy resident) Samantha Kuten's work will be published in Transplant Infectious Disease. Her article "Observations on the Use of Cidofovir for BK Virus Infection in Renal Transplantation" represents work from her PGY1 Pharmacy residency's major project. We look forward to many more research findings as Samantha continues her tenure at HMH as a Solid Organ Transplant clinical pharmacist.
May 2014- All Residency Programs positions are filled!!
We have had another successful year with all of our residency programs matching! Thanks to everyone for their interest in our programs. We concluded the residency recruitment process last week with our PGY1 Pharmacy Residency for International Graduates securing its two residents for the upcoming 2014-2015 year.
April 2014- Kuten again to represent HMH at Fellows Conference
PGY2 Solid Organ Transplant resident- Samantha Kuten will be busy traveling over the next few months. After finding out about her acceptance at WTC, her research "Cellular involvement rather than humoral characteristics predict renal grant dysfunction one year after antibody-mediated rejection" was awarded a travel grant and abstract acceptance at the 2014 Annual Fellows Conference: Advances in Organ Transplantation at the end of this month in Cambridge, MA.
March 2014- Kuten with 2 abstracts accepted at WTC
PGY2 Solid Organ Transplant resident- Samantha Kuten will be presenting 2 poster presentations at this year's World Transplant Congress in San Francisco, CA. "Cellular involvement rather than humoral characteristics predict renal graft dysfunction one year after antibody-mediated rejection" and "Treatment of high-level BK viremia with cidofovir compared to reduction in immunosuppression alone" represent research projects in her second year residency.
February 2014- Atallah's major project published
Former PGY2 Critical Care resident- Steven Atallah's hard work during his specialty residency year is paying off. His manuscript "Evaluation of the activated clotting time and activated partial thromboplastin time for the monitoring of heparin in adult extracorporeal membrane oxygenation patients" was accepted into the journal Perfusion.
January 2014- George presents case report at SCCM
While attending the 2014 SCCM National Congress in Phoenix, AZ, PGY2 Critical Care resident- Jessica George had the opportunity to polish her presentation skills as well. She presented a case report on the use of continuous methylene blue infusion for catecholamine refractory septic shock in liver patients.
December 2013- Former PGY2 ID resident- Perez honored with ASHP Foundation Literature Award
Katherine Perez's major research during her PGY2 Infectious Diseases residency has resulted in not only a manuscript publication but now has garnered her a 2013 ASHP Foundation Literature Award! She was presented with the Award for Innovation in Pharmacy Practice at a breakfast during the 2013 Midyear in Orlando, FL.
November 2013- BCPS certification for two of our residents
PGY2 residents: Leah Sanchez (Critical Care) and Christie Aguilar (Internal Medicine) have new credentials after their name. Both are now Board Certified Pharmacotherapy Specialists after passing the exam they took at the end of September. This is a great achievement they both earned so early in the residency year!
November 2013- McDaneld published in Annals of Pharmacotherapy
"Use of Daptomycin to Treat Infections With Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus Isolates Having Vancomycin Minimum Inhibitory Concentrations of 1.5 to 2 ug/mL" represents PGY2 ID resident Pat McDaneld's research from his ID fellowship during the past 2 years.
September 2013- Moten's PGY1 residency project published
Former PGY1 resident- Misbah Moten received news that her PGY1 major project "Low Molecular Weight Heparin Dosing and Monitoring in Solid Organ Transplant Recipients" was accepted for publication in the journal Clinical Transplantation. Misbah has since gone on to complete a PGY2 residency in Solid Organ Transplant and practice in this specialty area.
August 2013- Former PGY1 resident- Bennett Noell's major project published
You can now find Bennett Noell's published manuscript in Transplantation Proceedings 2013 Jul-Aug;45(6):2371-4. The article "Effect of Hypogammaglobinemia on the Incidence of Community-Acquired Respiratory Viral Infections After Lung Transplantation" represents Bennett's major project during his PGY1 residency year with former HMH PGY1 and PGY2 SOT resident, Kyle Dawson as his preceptor.
July 2013- "A rose by any other name would smell as sweet"
We are not just nostalgic for Shakespeare, we actually do have another name. What is formerly "The Methodist Hospital" will now be known as "Houston Methodist Hospital". It is time to distinguish ourselves nationally and internationally from the other 80 plus Methodist hospitals around the country. Houston’s reputation is growing, and this is a great time to more closely align ourselves with our home town.
May 2013- Second position for PGY2 Oncology Residency Program
If you haven't been aware, we have been in the middle of a pharmacy resident boom for the past 5 years. With the unprecedented growth and expansion of Oncology services within TMH, a second Oncology Pharmacy residency position was just added. This position in addition to the two PGY1 International Graduate positions, marks 3 new residency positions added just this year. This bring our incoming pharmacy residents to a total of 17 to begin in the 2013-2014 residency year!
April 2013- Phenomenal month for Jantz
PGY2 Solid Organ Transplant resident Arin Jantz has been hard at work and its paying off! Her case series entitled "Treatment of Acute Tacrolimus Toxicity with Phenytoin in Solid Organ Transplant Recipients" was accepted for publication in the journal Case Reports in Transplantation. She was also awarded a travel grant and gave an oral presentation on "Creatinine as a Marker of Rejection Reversal in Recipients with Post-Treatment Biopsies" at the 2013 Annual Fellows Conference: Advances in Organ Transplantation on April 18-20 in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
April 2013- TMH's PGY1 Residency awarded TSHP Residency Program Excellence Award
After submitting a lengthy application with over 20 letters of support from former PGY1 residents, we received the momentous news that our PGY1 residency program won the Texas Society of Health-System Pharmacists (TSHP) Residency Program Excellence Award! On April 26th, during the TSHP Annual meeting in Austin, TX, Tommy Schwartz, the PGY1 Pharmacy Residency Program director accepted this noteworthy honor. The program, which was started in 1987, is being recognized for its excellence within Texas as well as nationally. Next up, we are setting our sights on the ASHP Residency Program Excellence Award.
March 2013- Swan and Thompson-Moore published in Journal of Hospital Medicine
Former PGY1 and PGY2 Critical Care Resident, Joshua Swan and co-author and former PGY1 and PGY2 Internal Medicine resident, Nathan Thompson-Moore were recently published in the Journal of Hospital Medicine. Their research, "Incidence of Cholinesterase Inhibitor Therapy Initiation Among Hospitalized Patients" reflects work during Nathan's PGY2 Internal Medicine residency and while Dr. Swan has been in his current position as an Assistant Professor of Pharmacy Practice at Texas Southern University.
March 2013- Adeola's poster accepted by the European Cystic Fibrosis Society
Congratulations to Mobolaji Adeola, PGY2 Internal Medicine resident who's research was accepted for a poster presentation at the European Cystic Fibrosis Society conference to be held in Lisbon, Portugal on June 12-15. Her work entitled, "Incidence of Nephrotoxicity Associated with Concomitant Colistimethate and Vancomycin Use in Cystic Fibrosis Patients" represents her major research project during this residency year.
January 2013- Wanat published in Annals of Pharmacotherapy
Quickly following his predecessor, former TMH PGY1 and PGY2 Critical Care resident, Matthew Wanat's work from his 2nd year residency was accepted into Annals of Pharmacotherapy! The case report, "Alternative monitoring of argatroban using plasma-diluted thrombin time" will be printed in an upcoming issue of the journal. Matt is currently a Clinical Assistant Professor at University of Houston College of Pharmacy.
January 2013- Former Critical Care resident- Desai published in Surgical Infections
Former TMH PGY1 and PGY2 Critical Care resident, Sapana Desai has been published! "Nucleated red blood cells are associated with a higher mortality rate in patients with surgical sepsis" represents findings from her major project in her Critical Care residency. Sapana is currently a Clinical Pharmacy Specialist in Emergency Medicine at Memorial Hermann Memorial City Medical Center.
Another successful year for our PGY2 residents with BCPS!
PGY2 residents: Mobolaji Adeola (IM), Steven Atallah (CC), Amaris Fuentes (CC), Arin Jantz (SOT), and Wenjing Wei (ID) are now officially Board Certified Pharmacotherapy Specialists! All 5 residents started studying soon after beginning their residency program and took the exam in October. This milestone is encouraged and supported for all of our PGY2 residents (exception: Oncology because a PGY2 resident does not meet the qualification criteria for BCOP yet) and marks a great achievement so early in their careers. Our department now boasts 39 board certified pharmacists in four of the six recognized specialties. Pharmacotherapy (36); Psychiatric (1); Oncology (1); Nutrition Support (1). This total is up from a mere 11 board certified pharmacists just seven years ago and representing only the pharmacotherapy and oncology specialties at that time.
December 2012- Perez published in Archives of Pathology
Congratulations to Katherine Perez on the electronic publication of "Integrating Rapid Pathogen Identification and Antimicrobial Stewardship Significantly Decreases Hospital Costs" in Archives of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine (http://www.archivesofpathology.org/ under Early Online Release). This landmark article is the first in the Archives' effort to focus on evidence based research in laboratory cost reduction and cost effectiveness under the auspices of the new Masthead Section on Clinical Effectiveness and Economics. CAP Today will feature a story on this visionary TMH study in the near future, including an interview with senior author, Dr. James Musser.
December 2012- Fuentes receives Alan Fields Award
Amaris Fuentes, PGY2 Critical Care resident, was awarded one of the Texas Society of Critical Care Medicine’s (TSCCM) Alan Fields Awards for her research entitled, Comparison of Calculated versus Urine Measured Creatinine Clearance in the Critically Ill. Amaris’ work, supported by her preceptor on the project, Josh Swan, was selected as the top abstract among individuals with less than two years experience category. The Alan Fields Award recognizes TSCCM researchers and provides winners support for attendance at the Annual Society of Critical Care Congress. Amaris will also present her work locally at the February 20th Annual TSCCM Banquet. Dr. Fuentes is the second TMH PGY2-Critical Care Pharmacy Resident to be honored with the award in the last 3 years.
New hiring policy starting January 1, 2013
Houston Methodist is committed to improving the health of our patients, employees and communities around us. As a health care provider, it's our responsibility to promote a healthier environment for our employees. Accordingly, effective January 1, 2013, Houston Methodist will no longer hire tobacco users. Applicants will be tested for tobacco usage during the post-offer physical and drug screen. If an applicant tests positive for tobacco use, the offer will be rescinded and individuals will be given an opportunity to participate in a free Houston Methodist-provided tobacco cessation program.
October 2012- PGY1 for International Graduates- a unique addition to our residency programs!
Starting in 2013, a new PGY1 residency program for International Graduates will ensue. This program has been developed with the specific needs of the international pharmacist graduate in mind. Please see the link for this to the left!
October 2012- Sirimaturos to become the new PGY2 Critical Care Residency director
Mike Liebl is ending his term directly overseeing the PGY2 Critical Care Residency with the 2012-2013 class. He is starting the new PGY1- International Graduates residency program and will be the Residency director for this program. We thank Mike for his vision in crafting the program beginning in 2004 and for his dedication and commitment towards its development to date. Mike is leaving the program in good hands with Critical Care specialist, Michael Sirimaturos taking over the reins. A product of TMH's PGY1 and PGY2 Critical Care residency programs, Michael was hired on to focus on the MICU population in 2008. He will be a welcome addition to the residency program leadership!
July 2012 - Gorbach appointed to ASHP New Practitioners Group
Christy Gorbach, 2nd year Health-System Pharmacy Administration Resident, has been appointed to the ASHP New Practitioners Forum Public Affairs and Advocacy Advisory Group where she will have the opportunity to collaborate with group members in discussing and developing pharmacy advocacy venues for new practitioners in ASHP.
June 2012- Natali's AJHP acceptance
Former Health- System Pharmacy Administration resident- Becky Natali's manuscript entitled "Impact of a real-time, dynamic, pharmacotherapy alerting system to provide feedback to pharmacists during order verification in an acute care setting" was informed of her acceptance in American Journal of Health-System Pharmacy. This paper was co-authored with her program director- Alex Varkey, clinical manager- Mike Liebl, and University of Houston Associate Professor and Chair- Kevin Garey.
June 2012- Wanat's acceptance for poster presentation
PGY2 Critical Care resident- Matt Wanat's poster "Cost-effectiveness analysis of dexmedetomidine versus propofol for sedation in mechanically ventilated patients after cardiovascular surgery; an institutional perspective" was accepted for presentation at ACCP's Virtual Poster Symposium in May 2012. This represents Matt's major research during this residency year.
May 2012- Swan's acceptance in Critical Care
Former PGY2 Critical Care resident Joshua Swan's major project from his PGY2 residency has come to publication fruition! "Antipsychotic use and diagnosis of delirium in the intesive care unit" was published in the May issue of Critical Care. This was co-authored with Kalli Fitousis and Jeff Hall, also former Houston Methodist residents and current Houston Methodist clinical specialists. Critical Care 2012,16:R84
March 2012- DeVos published in Kidney International and Clinical Transplantation
Former PGY1 and PGY2 Solid Organ Tranplant resident Jenny DeVos' work from her PGY2 residency will now be available to view in print. "Donor-specific HLA-DQ antibodies may contribute to poor graft outcome after renal transplantation" will be available in the May issue 2012 issue of Kidney International. Based off of the same research, she also published a chapter in Clinical Transplantation titled "De novo donor specific antibodies and patient outcomes in renal transplantation."
March 2012- Perez's manuscript accepted for publication
PGY2 Infectious Diseases resident- Katherine Perez was notified that her manuscript from her PGY1 residency's major project was accepted for publication. "Cefepime for Gram-Negative Bacteremia in Long-term Hemodialysis: A Single-Center Experience" will be published in the May issue of American Journal of Kidney Disease. Perez KK et al. March 2012- Gorbach's acceptance for presentation at the 2012 ASHP Summer Meeting in Baltimore, MD
Health- System Pharmacy Administration resident- Christy Gorbach's case presentation entitled "Hospital Pharmacy, An invisible profession?" was accepted for presentation at the 2012 ASHP Summer Meeting in Baltimore, MD. Christy was one of only a handful of residents nationally whose projects were selected as a case presentation topic for the meeting. She will also present a poster at the meeting.
March 2012- Another residency program given preliminary accreditation!
On March 13-14th, an ASHP accreditation team came to survey our PGY2 Oncology Residency program in its inaugural year. This is the 3rd year in a row for our department to host the survey team to evaluate the addition of our 7th residency program. At the conclusion of their visit, we were awarded preliminary accreditation with the official determination and term to be decided in the August Commission on Credentialing meeting. Congratulations to the program director- Joe Murillo and his inaugural resident- Hanna Zaghloul!
March 2012- Thompson-Moore published in AJHP
PGY2 IM resident and first author, Nathan Thompson-Moore along with Clinical Manager and PGY2 Critical Care Residency Program Director, Mike Liebl collaborated together to submit an article entitled, "Health care system vulnerabilities: Understanding the root causes of patient harm" to AJHP. It can be found in this month's issue! Am J Health Syst Pharm 2012;69:431-436.
January 2012- Zaghloul officially published in the American Journal of Hospice and Palliative Medicine
PGY2 Oncology resident Hanna Zaghloul is now first author of "Treatment given near the end of life in castration-resistant prostate cancer" published in the American Journal of Hospice and Palliative Medicine. Her article is currently available online and soon to be allocated to an issue.
December 2011- Covert gets published from PGY1 Year
Former PGY1 resident Wendy Covert is primary author on "Incidence of myelodysplastic syndromes in patients receiving concurrent myelosuppressive chemotherapy and pegfilgrastim published in Journal of Oncology Pharmacy Practice this month. This publication came to fruition from her major project during her PGY1 residency year.
November 2011- Congratulations to our newly Board Certified PGY2 Residents!
This marks another successful year that several of our PGY2 pharmacy residents have sat for and passed the Board Certified Pharmacotherapy Specialist (BCPS) exam. PGY2 residents: Kevin Donahue (Critical Care), Matt Wanat (Critical Care), Nathan Thompson-Moore (Internal Medicine), and Katherine Perez (Infectious Diseases) participated in an organized BCPS study group in addition to studying individually this residency year. We are very proud of their achievement so early in their careers!
October 2011- Donahue's abstract accepted at SCCM
PGY2 Critical Care resident Kevin Donahue's abstract "Hyperkalemia in Patients Receiving Potassium Replacement During Therapeutic Hypothermia" was accepted at Society of Critical Care Medicine's 41st Critical Care Congress which will be held in February 2012.
October 2011 - Thompson-Moore receives grant to ACCP Annual Meeting
PGY2 Internal Medicine resident Nathan Thompson-Moore was able to attend the 2011 ACCP Annual Meeting in Pittsburgh, PA on an ACCP Resident/Fellow Travel Grant. In order to receive this, Nathan had to submit an application, CV, reference letter and a 250 word essay by August 23rd.
September 2011- PGY2 Residencies receive 6 year accreditation!
Both the PGY2 Infectious Diseases and Health Systems Pharmacy Administration residencies received notification from ASHP's Commission on Credentialing granting them a 6 year accreditation. Both programs were surveyed earlier in February for their initial accreditation visit and were awaiting the final notification and decision on term. Six years is the longest term awarded for residency accreditation.
September 2011- Perez Hosts Poster at ICAAC
PGY2 Infectious Disease resident Katherine Perez just returned from presenting a poster at the 51st annual Interscience Conference on Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy in Chicago. Her poster presented information from her PGY1 resident project "Safety and Efficacy of 2g of Cefepime Administered Immediately Post Dialysis for Gram-Negative Bacteremia in Patients Receiving Long-Term Hemodialysis."
July 2011- Wanat Presents Poster at ISTH conference in Japan
PGY2 Critical Care resident- Matt Wanat traveled to the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis conference in Kyoto, Japan from July 23-28 this year to present his poster on "Characterizing Heparin-Induced-Thrombocytopenia diagnosis and treatment in the ICU". This poster reflected work from his PGY1 resident year at Houston Methodist.
July 2011 - PGY2 Oncology Program to Begin
We are growing! Our PGY2 Oncology Residency program will start July 2011. This will expand our current number of PGY2 programs to 5 and total number of residents (PGY1 and PGY2) to 14.
March 2011 - Stearns Accepted for presentation at the 2011 ASHP Summer Meeting in Denver, CO
Health Systems Pharmacy Administration resident- Alex Stearns' case presentation on "Aligning Perceptions of Staff Pharmacists with Expectatons of Pharmacy Management by Implementing a Just Culture" was accepted for presentation at the 2011 ASHP Summer Meeting in Denver, CO. Alex was one of two residents nationally whose projects were selected as a case presentation topic for the meeting. He also presented a poster with the same title at the meeting.
February 2011 - ASHP Surveys ID and Pharmacy Administration Programs and grants preliminary accreditation!
ASHP Surveyors came February 16-17, 2011 to review the PGY2 Infectious Diseases and Health-Systems Pharmacy Administration Residency programs for accreditation. It was a successful survey and we received preliminary accreditation for both programs! The final approval and length of accreditation will be determined in the August 2011 Commission on Credentialing meeting. ASHP was here as recently as March 2010 to review our Internal Medicine and Solid Organ Transplant (initial accreditations) along with our Critical Care and PGY1 residency (re-accreditations). We received accreditation/reaccreditation for all of our programs during that survey as well.
February 2011 - Current and past PGY2 SOT residents recognized internationally through their residency research projects
Past resident and current clinical specialist Kyle Dawson was recently informed of the publications of two of his past residency projects. One in the November 2010 issue of Clinical Transplantation titled "Cardioprotective medication use after renal transplantation", and one in an upcoming issue of Transplantation titled "Effect of immunosuppression for first kidney or kidney/pancreas transplant on sensitization at the time of second transplant." Both of these are considered leading journals in the field of transplantation. PGY2 resident Jenny Devos has three abstracts related to her research, including one as an oral presentation, accepted at the 2011 American Transplant Congress in Philadelphia this May.

November 2010 - Critical Care Residents' Research Accepted at National Critical Care Congress
Congratulations to Josh Swan and Sapana Desai who each had research abstracts accepted to the 2011 Annual Critical Care Congress of the Society of Critical Care Medicine! Both residents and their study collaborators received word their abstrats would be part of the Poster Presentation session historically reserved for the top 20% of posters accepted to the Congress.
Sapana Desai was also awarded the Dr. Alan Fields Travel Grant from the Texas Society of Critical Care Medicine Chapter to support her travel to the Congress.
September 2010 - Ruegger Receives Support for Funded Research
We are excited to report that PGY2 Internal Medicine resident Melanie Ruegger received an award of $6,500 for research support for the Post-Operative Ileus National Trends (POINT) study. This study is part of a multi-center investigation of the impact of post-operative ileus and effect of interventions to reduce the incidence.
July 2010 - Natali appointed to ASHP New Practitioners Group
Becky Natali, 2nd year Health-System Pharmacy Administration Resident, has been appointed to the ASHP New Practitioners Forum Leadership and Career Development Advisory Group where she will have the opportunity to collaborate with group members in developing leadership and career development resources for new practitioners in ASHP.
March 2010 - Critical Care Residency Program Receives Grant Funding
The PGY2 Critical Care residency program received a 2010 Pharmacy Residency Stipend Support Award in the amount of $40,000 from Amgen®. The stipend support comes after consideration of the program's application submitted earlier in the year and will provide funding to support one of the 2010-2011 Critical Care resident positions.
Current PGY1-International Graduate resident Robin Klasek is already getting his feet wet with scientifc writing. Together with SOT clinical specialist Kyle Dawson, we can now view their invited submission to ISHLT's global monthly newsletter. "Pharmacotherapy Considerations for Agents Used in the Treatment of Non-Tuberculosis Mycobacterial Infections in Cardiothoracic Transplant Recipients" is in the Pharmacy & Pharmacology section of the February 2015 issue.
January 2015- El Rahi to be published in Pharmacotherapy
It's a great start to a new year for former PGY1 International Graduate resident- Cynthia El Rahi. What began as an interesting patient on her Internal Medicine rotation, will soon be a publication in Pharmacotherapy. She has received the news that "Successful Use of N-Acetylcysteine to Treat Severe Hepatic Injury Caused by a Dietary Fitness Supplement" will make its way to an upcoming issue.
December 2014- Thomas to be published in Hospital Pharmacy
Former PGY1 and current PGY2 Critical Care resident Julin Thomas received great news over the holidays. Her major project from her PGY1 year was accepted for publication in Hospital Pharmacy. Be on the lookout for "Descriptive analysis of patient readmissions within 60 days due to medication-related events" online or in print!

November 2014- Thompson-Moore to be published in Clinical Applied Thrombosis/Hemostasis
Former PGY2 and PGY2 Internal Medicine resident Nathan Thompson-Moore has received laudable news that his research was accepted for publication. "Evaluation and Pharmacokinetics of Treatment-Dose Enoxaparin in Hospitalized Patients with Morbid Obesity" was a prospective major project during his PGY2 year. We look forward to seeing the article in print!
October 2014- George has abstract acceptance at the SCCM Congress
Former PGY1 and PGY2 Critical Care resident Jessica George will be representing her work from her PGY2 year at the SCCM Critical Care Congress in Phoenix, AZ. "Inhaled nitric oxide versus inhaled epoprostenol for the acute management of pulmonary hypertension in critically ill patients" will be the poster she will be showcasing in January 2015.
October 2014- Kwak to be published in Journal of Pharmacy Practice
Former PGY1- International Graduate resident Amy Kwak received news after returning to South Korea that her research during her residency year will be published in an upcoming issue of the Journal of Pharmacy Practice. We look forward to reading "Validity and reliability of a systematic database search strategy to identify publications resulting from pharmacy residency research projects" in print form!
September 2014- Dawson to take over the reins of the PGY2 Solid Organ Transplant Program Director
Former PGY1 and PGY2 Solid Organ Transplant resident and current Solid Organ Transplant clinical specialist- Kyle Dawson will slowly assume the role as RPD of the PGY2 Solid Organ Transplant residency. He is replacing Samir Patel who started the residency program in 2008 and will continue to pursue other research and clinical interests in his role as a Solid Organ Transplant clinical specialist. Both remain dedicated to supporting the continued success of this residency program and ensuring a smooth transition.
August 2014- McDaneld's work published and selected for Society of ID Pharmacists Paper of the Year
Former PGY1 and PGY2 Infectious Diseases resident Patrick McDaneld is reaping the rewards from a stellar PGY1 project. The culmination of this became "In vitro assessment and multicenter cohort study of comparative nephrotoxicity rates associated with colistimethate versus polymixin B therapy" and was published in the May 2014 issue of Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy. We have just received news that it was also selected as the 2013-2014 Infectious Diseases Pharmacotherapy Paper Award. Congrats to Pat and all involved in this success!
August 2014- PGY1 International Graduate Residency recommended for preliminary accreditation
On August 13-14, ASHP conducted a survey of the new PGY1 International Graduate residency to review its candidacy for residency accreditation. Setting accreditation history, the survey was conducted through web-cam and online conferencing for the 2 day review due to HMH's positive and longstanding accreditation history. HMH is pleased to be recommended for preliminary accreditation and awaits the formal decision after the March 2015 Commission on Credentialing meeting.
July 2014- Kuten's PGY1 major project to be published
Former PGY2 Solid Organ Transplant resident (and PGY1 Pharmacy resident) Samantha Kuten's work will be published in Transplant Infectious Disease. Her article "Observations on the Use of Cidofovir for BK Virus Infection in Renal Transplantation" represents work from her PGY1 Pharmacy residency's major project. We look forward to many more research findings as Samantha continues her tenure at HMH as a Solid Organ Transplant clinical pharmacist.
May 2014- All Residency Programs positions are filled!!
We have had another successful year with all of our residency programs matching! Thanks to everyone for their interest in our programs. We concluded the residency recruitment process last week with our PGY1 Pharmacy Residency for International Graduates securing its two residents for the upcoming 2014-2015 year.
April 2014- Kuten again to represent HMH at Fellows Conference
PGY2 Solid Organ Transplant resident- Samantha Kuten will be busy traveling over the next few months. After finding out about her acceptance at WTC, her research "Cellular involvement rather than humoral characteristics predict renal grant dysfunction one year after antibody-mediated rejection" was awarded a travel grant and abstract acceptance at the 2014 Annual Fellows Conference: Advances in Organ Transplantation at the end of this month in Cambridge, MA.
March 2014- Kuten with 2 abstracts accepted at WTC
PGY2 Solid Organ Transplant resident- Samantha Kuten will be presenting 2 poster presentations at this year's World Transplant Congress in San Francisco, CA. "Cellular involvement rather than humoral characteristics predict renal graft dysfunction one year after antibody-mediated rejection" and "Treatment of high-level BK viremia with cidofovir compared to reduction in immunosuppression alone" represent research projects in her second year residency.
February 2014- Atallah's major project published
Former PGY2 Critical Care resident- Steven Atallah's hard work during his specialty residency year is paying off. His manuscript "Evaluation of the activated clotting time and activated partial thromboplastin time for the monitoring of heparin in adult extracorporeal membrane oxygenation patients" was accepted into the journal Perfusion.
January 2014- George presents case report at SCCM
While attending the 2014 SCCM National Congress in Phoenix, AZ, PGY2 Critical Care resident- Jessica George had the opportunity to polish her presentation skills as well. She presented a case report on the use of continuous methylene blue infusion for catecholamine refractory septic shock in liver patients.
December 2013- Former PGY2 ID resident- Perez honored with ASHP Foundation Literature Award
Katherine Perez's major research during her PGY2 Infectious Diseases residency has resulted in not only a manuscript publication but now has garnered her a 2013 ASHP Foundation Literature Award! She was presented with the Award for Innovation in Pharmacy Practice at a breakfast during the 2013 Midyear in Orlando, FL.
November 2013- BCPS certification for two of our residents
PGY2 residents: Leah Sanchez (Critical Care) and Christie Aguilar (Internal Medicine) have new credentials after their name. Both are now Board Certified Pharmacotherapy Specialists after passing the exam they took at the end of September. This is a great achievement they both earned so early in the residency year!
November 2013- McDaneld published in Annals of Pharmacotherapy
"Use of Daptomycin to Treat Infections With Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus Isolates Having Vancomycin Minimum Inhibitory Concentrations of 1.5 to 2 ug/mL" represents PGY2 ID resident Pat McDaneld's research from his ID fellowship during the past 2 years.
September 2013- Moten's PGY1 residency project published
Former PGY1 resident- Misbah Moten received news that her PGY1 major project "Low Molecular Weight Heparin Dosing and Monitoring in Solid Organ Transplant Recipients" was accepted for publication in the journal Clinical Transplantation. Misbah has since gone on to complete a PGY2 residency in Solid Organ Transplant and practice in this specialty area.
August 2013- Former PGY1 resident- Bennett Noell's major project published
You can now find Bennett Noell's published manuscript in Transplantation Proceedings 2013 Jul-Aug;45(6):2371-4. The article "Effect of Hypogammaglobinemia on the Incidence of Community-Acquired Respiratory Viral Infections After Lung Transplantation" represents Bennett's major project during his PGY1 residency year with former HMH PGY1 and PGY2 SOT resident, Kyle Dawson as his preceptor.
July 2013- "A rose by any other name would smell as sweet"
We are not just nostalgic for Shakespeare, we actually do have another name. What is formerly "The Methodist Hospital" will now be known as "Houston Methodist Hospital". It is time to distinguish ourselves nationally and internationally from the other 80 plus Methodist hospitals around the country. Houston’s reputation is growing, and this is a great time to more closely align ourselves with our home town.
May 2013- Second position for PGY2 Oncology Residency Program
If you haven't been aware, we have been in the middle of a pharmacy resident boom for the past 5 years. With the unprecedented growth and expansion of Oncology services within TMH, a second Oncology Pharmacy residency position was just added. This position in addition to the two PGY1 International Graduate positions, marks 3 new residency positions added just this year. This bring our incoming pharmacy residents to a total of 17 to begin in the 2013-2014 residency year!
April 2013- Phenomenal month for Jantz
PGY2 Solid Organ Transplant resident Arin Jantz has been hard at work and its paying off! Her case series entitled "Treatment of Acute Tacrolimus Toxicity with Phenytoin in Solid Organ Transplant Recipients" was accepted for publication in the journal Case Reports in Transplantation. She was also awarded a travel grant and gave an oral presentation on "Creatinine as a Marker of Rejection Reversal in Recipients with Post-Treatment Biopsies" at the 2013 Annual Fellows Conference: Advances in Organ Transplantation on April 18-20 in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
April 2013- TMH's PGY1 Residency awarded TSHP Residency Program Excellence Award
After submitting a lengthy application with over 20 letters of support from former PGY1 residents, we received the momentous news that our PGY1 residency program won the Texas Society of Health-System Pharmacists (TSHP) Residency Program Excellence Award! On April 26th, during the TSHP Annual meeting in Austin, TX, Tommy Schwartz, the PGY1 Pharmacy Residency Program director accepted this noteworthy honor. The program, which was started in 1987, is being recognized for its excellence within Texas as well as nationally. Next up, we are setting our sights on the ASHP Residency Program Excellence Award.
March 2013- Swan and Thompson-Moore published in Journal of Hospital Medicine
Former PGY1 and PGY2 Critical Care Resident, Joshua Swan and co-author and former PGY1 and PGY2 Internal Medicine resident, Nathan Thompson-Moore were recently published in the Journal of Hospital Medicine. Their research, "Incidence of Cholinesterase Inhibitor Therapy Initiation Among Hospitalized Patients" reflects work during Nathan's PGY2 Internal Medicine residency and while Dr. Swan has been in his current position as an Assistant Professor of Pharmacy Practice at Texas Southern University.
March 2013- Adeola's poster accepted by the European Cystic Fibrosis Society
Congratulations to Mobolaji Adeola, PGY2 Internal Medicine resident who's research was accepted for a poster presentation at the European Cystic Fibrosis Society conference to be held in Lisbon, Portugal on June 12-15. Her work entitled, "Incidence of Nephrotoxicity Associated with Concomitant Colistimethate and Vancomycin Use in Cystic Fibrosis Patients" represents her major research project during this residency year.
January 2013- Wanat published in Annals of Pharmacotherapy
Quickly following his predecessor, former TMH PGY1 and PGY2 Critical Care resident, Matthew Wanat's work from his 2nd year residency was accepted into Annals of Pharmacotherapy! The case report, "Alternative monitoring of argatroban using plasma-diluted thrombin time" will be printed in an upcoming issue of the journal. Matt is currently a Clinical Assistant Professor at University of Houston College of Pharmacy.
January 2013- Former Critical Care resident- Desai published in Surgical Infections
Former TMH PGY1 and PGY2 Critical Care resident, Sapana Desai has been published! "Nucleated red blood cells are associated with a higher mortality rate in patients with surgical sepsis" represents findings from her major project in her Critical Care residency. Sapana is currently a Clinical Pharmacy Specialist in Emergency Medicine at Memorial Hermann Memorial City Medical Center.
Another successful year for our PGY2 residents with BCPS!
PGY2 residents: Mobolaji Adeola (IM), Steven Atallah (CC), Amaris Fuentes (CC), Arin Jantz (SOT), and Wenjing Wei (ID) are now officially Board Certified Pharmacotherapy Specialists! All 5 residents started studying soon after beginning their residency program and took the exam in October. This milestone is encouraged and supported for all of our PGY2 residents (exception: Oncology because a PGY2 resident does not meet the qualification criteria for BCOP yet) and marks a great achievement so early in their careers. Our department now boasts 39 board certified pharmacists in four of the six recognized specialties. Pharmacotherapy (36); Psychiatric (1); Oncology (1); Nutrition Support (1). This total is up from a mere 11 board certified pharmacists just seven years ago and representing only the pharmacotherapy and oncology specialties at that time.
December 2012- Perez published in Archives of Pathology
Congratulations to Katherine Perez on the electronic publication of "Integrating Rapid Pathogen Identification and Antimicrobial Stewardship Significantly Decreases Hospital Costs" in Archives of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine (http://www.archivesofpathology.org/ under Early Online Release). This landmark article is the first in the Archives' effort to focus on evidence based research in laboratory cost reduction and cost effectiveness under the auspices of the new Masthead Section on Clinical Effectiveness and Economics. CAP Today will feature a story on this visionary TMH study in the near future, including an interview with senior author, Dr. James Musser.
December 2012- Fuentes receives Alan Fields Award
Amaris Fuentes, PGY2 Critical Care resident, was awarded one of the Texas Society of Critical Care Medicine’s (TSCCM) Alan Fields Awards for her research entitled, Comparison of Calculated versus Urine Measured Creatinine Clearance in the Critically Ill. Amaris’ work, supported by her preceptor on the project, Josh Swan, was selected as the top abstract among individuals with less than two years experience category. The Alan Fields Award recognizes TSCCM researchers and provides winners support for attendance at the Annual Society of Critical Care Congress. Amaris will also present her work locally at the February 20th Annual TSCCM Banquet. Dr. Fuentes is the second TMH PGY2-Critical Care Pharmacy Resident to be honored with the award in the last 3 years.
New hiring policy starting January 1, 2013
Houston Methodist is committed to improving the health of our patients, employees and communities around us. As a health care provider, it's our responsibility to promote a healthier environment for our employees. Accordingly, effective January 1, 2013, Houston Methodist will no longer hire tobacco users. Applicants will be tested for tobacco usage during the post-offer physical and drug screen. If an applicant tests positive for tobacco use, the offer will be rescinded and individuals will be given an opportunity to participate in a free Houston Methodist-provided tobacco cessation program.
October 2012- PGY1 for International Graduates- a unique addition to our residency programs!
Starting in 2013, a new PGY1 residency program for International Graduates will ensue. This program has been developed with the specific needs of the international pharmacist graduate in mind. Please see the link for this to the left!
October 2012- Sirimaturos to become the new PGY2 Critical Care Residency director
Mike Liebl is ending his term directly overseeing the PGY2 Critical Care Residency with the 2012-2013 class. He is starting the new PGY1- International Graduates residency program and will be the Residency director for this program. We thank Mike for his vision in crafting the program beginning in 2004 and for his dedication and commitment towards its development to date. Mike is leaving the program in good hands with Critical Care specialist, Michael Sirimaturos taking over the reins. A product of TMH's PGY1 and PGY2 Critical Care residency programs, Michael was hired on to focus on the MICU population in 2008. He will be a welcome addition to the residency program leadership!
July 2012 - Gorbach appointed to ASHP New Practitioners Group
Christy Gorbach, 2nd year Health-System Pharmacy Administration Resident, has been appointed to the ASHP New Practitioners Forum Public Affairs and Advocacy Advisory Group where she will have the opportunity to collaborate with group members in discussing and developing pharmacy advocacy venues for new practitioners in ASHP.
June 2012- Natali's AJHP acceptance
Former Health- System Pharmacy Administration resident- Becky Natali's manuscript entitled "Impact of a real-time, dynamic, pharmacotherapy alerting system to provide feedback to pharmacists during order verification in an acute care setting" was informed of her acceptance in American Journal of Health-System Pharmacy. This paper was co-authored with her program director- Alex Varkey, clinical manager- Mike Liebl, and University of Houston Associate Professor and Chair- Kevin Garey.
June 2012- Wanat's acceptance for poster presentation
PGY2 Critical Care resident- Matt Wanat's poster "Cost-effectiveness analysis of dexmedetomidine versus propofol for sedation in mechanically ventilated patients after cardiovascular surgery; an institutional perspective" was accepted for presentation at ACCP's Virtual Poster Symposium in May 2012. This represents Matt's major research during this residency year.
May 2012- Swan's acceptance in Critical Care
Former PGY2 Critical Care resident Joshua Swan's major project from his PGY2 residency has come to publication fruition! "Antipsychotic use and diagnosis of delirium in the intesive care unit" was published in the May issue of Critical Care. This was co-authored with Kalli Fitousis and Jeff Hall, also former Houston Methodist residents and current Houston Methodist clinical specialists. Critical Care 2012,16:R84
March 2012- DeVos published in Kidney International and Clinical Transplantation
Former PGY1 and PGY2 Solid Organ Tranplant resident Jenny DeVos' work from her PGY2 residency will now be available to view in print. "Donor-specific HLA-DQ antibodies may contribute to poor graft outcome after renal transplantation" will be available in the May issue 2012 issue of Kidney International. Based off of the same research, she also published a chapter in Clinical Transplantation titled "De novo donor specific antibodies and patient outcomes in renal transplantation."
March 2012- Perez's manuscript accepted for publication
PGY2 Infectious Diseases resident- Katherine Perez was notified that her manuscript from her PGY1 residency's major project was accepted for publication. "Cefepime for Gram-Negative Bacteremia in Long-term Hemodialysis: A Single-Center Experience" will be published in the May issue of American Journal of Kidney Disease. Perez KK et al. March 2012- Gorbach's acceptance for presentation at the 2012 ASHP Summer Meeting in Baltimore, MD
Health- System Pharmacy Administration resident- Christy Gorbach's case presentation entitled "Hospital Pharmacy, An invisible profession?" was accepted for presentation at the 2012 ASHP Summer Meeting in Baltimore, MD. Christy was one of only a handful of residents nationally whose projects were selected as a case presentation topic for the meeting. She will also present a poster at the meeting.
March 2012- Another residency program given preliminary accreditation!
On March 13-14th, an ASHP accreditation team came to survey our PGY2 Oncology Residency program in its inaugural year. This is the 3rd year in a row for our department to host the survey team to evaluate the addition of our 7th residency program. At the conclusion of their visit, we were awarded preliminary accreditation with the official determination and term to be decided in the August Commission on Credentialing meeting. Congratulations to the program director- Joe Murillo and his inaugural resident- Hanna Zaghloul!
March 2012- Thompson-Moore published in AJHP
PGY2 IM resident and first author, Nathan Thompson-Moore along with Clinical Manager and PGY2 Critical Care Residency Program Director, Mike Liebl collaborated together to submit an article entitled, "Health care system vulnerabilities: Understanding the root causes of patient harm" to AJHP. It can be found in this month's issue! Am J Health Syst Pharm 2012;69:431-436.
January 2012- Zaghloul officially published in the American Journal of Hospice and Palliative Medicine
PGY2 Oncology resident Hanna Zaghloul is now first author of "Treatment given near the end of life in castration-resistant prostate cancer" published in the American Journal of Hospice and Palliative Medicine. Her article is currently available online and soon to be allocated to an issue.
December 2011- Covert gets published from PGY1 Year
Former PGY1 resident Wendy Covert is primary author on "Incidence of myelodysplastic syndromes in patients receiving concurrent myelosuppressive chemotherapy and pegfilgrastim published in Journal of Oncology Pharmacy Practice this month. This publication came to fruition from her major project during her PGY1 residency year.
November 2011- Congratulations to our newly Board Certified PGY2 Residents!
This marks another successful year that several of our PGY2 pharmacy residents have sat for and passed the Board Certified Pharmacotherapy Specialist (BCPS) exam. PGY2 residents: Kevin Donahue (Critical Care), Matt Wanat (Critical Care), Nathan Thompson-Moore (Internal Medicine), and Katherine Perez (Infectious Diseases) participated in an organized BCPS study group in addition to studying individually this residency year. We are very proud of their achievement so early in their careers!
October 2011- Donahue's abstract accepted at SCCM
PGY2 Critical Care resident Kevin Donahue's abstract "Hyperkalemia in Patients Receiving Potassium Replacement During Therapeutic Hypothermia" was accepted at Society of Critical Care Medicine's 41st Critical Care Congress which will be held in February 2012.
October 2011 - Thompson-Moore receives grant to ACCP Annual Meeting
PGY2 Internal Medicine resident Nathan Thompson-Moore was able to attend the 2011 ACCP Annual Meeting in Pittsburgh, PA on an ACCP Resident/Fellow Travel Grant. In order to receive this, Nathan had to submit an application, CV, reference letter and a 250 word essay by August 23rd.
September 2011- PGY2 Residencies receive 6 year accreditation!
Both the PGY2 Infectious Diseases and Health Systems Pharmacy Administration residencies received notification from ASHP's Commission on Credentialing granting them a 6 year accreditation. Both programs were surveyed earlier in February for their initial accreditation visit and were awaiting the final notification and decision on term. Six years is the longest term awarded for residency accreditation.
September 2011- Perez Hosts Poster at ICAAC
PGY2 Infectious Disease resident Katherine Perez just returned from presenting a poster at the 51st annual Interscience Conference on Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy in Chicago. Her poster presented information from her PGY1 resident project "Safety and Efficacy of 2g of Cefepime Administered Immediately Post Dialysis for Gram-Negative Bacteremia in Patients Receiving Long-Term Hemodialysis."
July 2011- Wanat Presents Poster at ISTH conference in Japan
PGY2 Critical Care resident- Matt Wanat traveled to the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis conference in Kyoto, Japan from July 23-28 this year to present his poster on "Characterizing Heparin-Induced-Thrombocytopenia diagnosis and treatment in the ICU". This poster reflected work from his PGY1 resident year at Houston Methodist.
July 2011 - PGY2 Oncology Program to Begin
We are growing! Our PGY2 Oncology Residency program will start July 2011. This will expand our current number of PGY2 programs to 5 and total number of residents (PGY1 and PGY2) to 14.
March 2011 - Stearns Accepted for presentation at the 2011 ASHP Summer Meeting in Denver, CO
Health Systems Pharmacy Administration resident- Alex Stearns' case presentation on "Aligning Perceptions of Staff Pharmacists with Expectatons of Pharmacy Management by Implementing a Just Culture" was accepted for presentation at the 2011 ASHP Summer Meeting in Denver, CO. Alex was one of two residents nationally whose projects were selected as a case presentation topic for the meeting. He also presented a poster with the same title at the meeting.
February 2011 - ASHP Surveys ID and Pharmacy Administration Programs and grants preliminary accreditation!
ASHP Surveyors came February 16-17, 2011 to review the PGY2 Infectious Diseases and Health-Systems Pharmacy Administration Residency programs for accreditation. It was a successful survey and we received preliminary accreditation for both programs! The final approval and length of accreditation will be determined in the August 2011 Commission on Credentialing meeting. ASHP was here as recently as March 2010 to review our Internal Medicine and Solid Organ Transplant (initial accreditations) along with our Critical Care and PGY1 residency (re-accreditations). We received accreditation/reaccreditation for all of our programs during that survey as well.
February 2011 - Current and past PGY2 SOT residents recognized internationally through their residency research projects
Past resident and current clinical specialist Kyle Dawson was recently informed of the publications of two of his past residency projects. One in the November 2010 issue of Clinical Transplantation titled "Cardioprotective medication use after renal transplantation", and one in an upcoming issue of Transplantation titled "Effect of immunosuppression for first kidney or kidney/pancreas transplant on sensitization at the time of second transplant." Both of these are considered leading journals in the field of transplantation. PGY2 resident Jenny Devos has three abstracts related to her research, including one as an oral presentation, accepted at the 2011 American Transplant Congress in Philadelphia this May.

November 2010 - Critical Care Residents' Research Accepted at National Critical Care Congress
Congratulations to Josh Swan and Sapana Desai who each had research abstracts accepted to the 2011 Annual Critical Care Congress of the Society of Critical Care Medicine! Both residents and their study collaborators received word their abstrats would be part of the Poster Presentation session historically reserved for the top 20% of posters accepted to the Congress.
Sapana Desai was also awarded the Dr. Alan Fields Travel Grant from the Texas Society of Critical Care Medicine Chapter to support her travel to the Congress.
September 2010 - Ruegger Receives Support for Funded Research
We are excited to report that PGY2 Internal Medicine resident Melanie Ruegger received an award of $6,500 for research support for the Post-Operative Ileus National Trends (POINT) study. This study is part of a multi-center investigation of the impact of post-operative ileus and effect of interventions to reduce the incidence.
July 2010 - Natali appointed to ASHP New Practitioners Group
Becky Natali, 2nd year Health-System Pharmacy Administration Resident, has been appointed to the ASHP New Practitioners Forum Leadership and Career Development Advisory Group where she will have the opportunity to collaborate with group members in developing leadership and career development resources for new practitioners in ASHP.
March 2010 - Critical Care Residency Program Receives Grant Funding
The PGY2 Critical Care residency program received a 2010 Pharmacy Residency Stipend Support Award in the amount of $40,000 from Amgen®. The stipend support comes after consideration of the program's application submitted earlier in the year and will provide funding to support one of the 2010-2011 Critical Care resident positions.
