Lexanne G. Mauney, MD, recently joined Houston Methodist Obstetrics and Gynecology Associates at Willowbrook. Mauney received her medical degree at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas and completed her residency in obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, Parkland Hospital, in Dallas.

Mauney, who practices both gynecology and obstetrics, takes a special interest in high-risk obstetrics. Her obstetrical training was augmented during her residency in the Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine at Parkland Hospital, which focuses on research, training and patient care for high-risk pregnancies. Patients at increased risk during pregnancy include women with hypertension, diabetes and vaginal birth after Cesarean (VBAC).

Mauney practices what she refers to as humanistic, evidence-based care. “I think it involves listening to your patients and empathizing with them,” she said. “I also follow the philosophy of 'First Do No Harm.' We don’t need to be doing the most expensive tests and procedures on every patient just because they exist. I think it’s extremely important to bring that discretion to our treatment of patients.”

Mauney’s clinical expertise includes:

  • High-risk obstetrics
  • Vaginal birth after Cesarean (VBAC)
  • Pelvic disease
  • Abnormal Pap smears/Cervical dysplasia
  • Birth control
  • Endometriosis
  • Fibroid tumors
  • Abnormal uterine bleeding
  • Obstetric procedures
  • Polycystic ovary disease (PCOS)
  • Minimally invasive surgical procedures
  • Sexually transmitted infections
  • Painful menstrual cycles

Most critical for Mauney is the patient-physician connection. “Getting back to the basics of medicine, it’s all about what patients tell you: their medical and family history, what they have been experiencing — and then the physical exam,” Mauney said.  “All the tests alone aren’t going to tell you what’s wrong with a patient. You really have to listen to them.”
