Houston Methodist St. John Hospital’s first Paint the Night Pink event, held Oct. 5 in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, was a major success.

“All of us at Houston Methodist St. John Hospital were thrilled by the turnout at Paint the Night Pink and we are excited to announce that this will be an annual event,” said CEO Dan Newman. “These types of community outreach programs are an important component of our commitment to the health and well-being of Bay Area women and families, and we are honored that so many of our friends and neighbors joined us. We hope to see everyone again next year.”

One of the highlights of the evening was the Kendra Scott Gives Back Trunk Show, which raised $406.30 for the Houston Methodist St. John Nursing Development Fund.

“We sincerely appreciate the generosity of the Kendra Scott team,” said Katherine Walsh, Chief Nursing Officer. “Their donation will help fund nursing research, education and fellowships not traditionally covered by operating budgets. The assistance of companies such as Kendra Scott makes it possible for us to provide even more extensive support to our outstanding team of nurses here at Houston Methodist St. John Hospital.”

Paint the Night Pink featured a panel of Houston Methodist St. John Hospital physicians, who discussed the importance of preventive breast health care as well as breast cancer risk factors and treatment options. The audience engaged with physicians in a lively question-and-answer session.

Guests were also treated to mini make-up sessions by Lancôme Cosmetics and chair massages by the Houston Methodist Wellness Team. Hors d’oeuvres were provided by Tradicao Restaurant of Clear Lake and pink ribbon cookies were specially prepared by the hospital kitchen staff.

To continue to raise awareness of breast cancer – and celebrate Bay Area survivors and those who are currently battling the disease – the hospital’s tower will be lit pink throughout the month of October.

One of the goals of the Paint the Night Pink event is to encourage local women to schedule their annual mammogram. Studies show that one in every eight women will develop breast cancer, and more than 85 percent of those diagnosed have no family history of the disease. The state-of-the-art imaging technology and dedicated breast radiologists at Houston Methodist St. John Hospital can detect even tiny abnormalities earlier than ever, giving women a significant advantage if treatment is needed.

“Early detection is key, and mammography is one of the most important screening tools we have. In addition, our dedicated breast radiologists are specially trained to detect breast cancer at its earliest stages and they review every patient mammogram at our hospital,” said Walsh. “The message that we want to send to women is simple: Don’t put off your annual mammogram.’”

Houston Methodist St. John Hospital provides both screening and diagnostic mammograms, as well as breast ultrasounds. Women ages 40 to 44 should consider beginning annual mammograms, and women ages 45 and older should be screened every year.

Schedule your mammogram online at houstonmethodist.org/online-scheduling or call 281.333.8858. Women who receive a mammogram during the month of October will receive a special gift to celebrate Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
