Houston Methodist Division of General Internal Medicine

The Houston Methodist Division of General Internal Medicine offers collaborative, patient-centered and research-based internal medicine, with equal commitment to high quality patient care and to the training and advancement of future primary care providers.

Our primary care clinics focus on acute care management, chronic disease management and post-hospital-discharge care. We work closely with other disciplines throughout the hospital, including the emergency department, hospitalist division and specialty care areas.

Clinically, our division makes significant advancements in the field of internal medicine. Through collaboration with various hospital departments, our Post Discharge Clinic was launched in 2024 to enhance patient outcomes and reduce readmissions.

The Internal Medicine Residency Program has developed a national reputation for creating well-rounded physicians. Our program achieved a remarkable 100% ABIM board pass rate for 2024, demonstrating our commitment to excellence.

Our Team

Our team of experienced internal medicine physicians specializes in diagnosis, treatment and disease management, with a focus on patient care and disease prevention. Our practitioners find a healthy balance of professional and personal satisfaction, providing high-quality, compassionate care.

Our internists are skilled in the management of patients who have undifferentiated or multisystem disease processes. Along with more common subspecialties — including chronic diseases, diabetes, hypertension and women’s health issues — we treat ambulatory and hospitalized patients whose conditions affect a particular organ or organ system.

We also participate in community outreach. San Jose Clinic is an elective site for training, providing care for uninsured or underinsured patients within the Houston region. Leveraging our involvement in social justice initiatives, we are expanding service-learning opportunities in collaboration with nonprofits like Awakening Healthcare.

Our Research

Houston Methodist offers an ideal environment for scientists and clinicians to collaborate in the common goals of discovery and improvement of patient outcomes.

We offer more than 690 clinical trials across nine departments, including studies in cancer, cardiovascular disease, inflammation and epigenetics, diabetes and metabolic disease, infectious disease, neurosciences, transplantation biology, genomic medicine, and tissue engineering and regenerative medicine.

Houston Methodist emphasizes the pursuit of research, including publications and presentations. Our residents work with well-recognized research mentors, and many present their work and widely publish.

Education & Training

Our division prioritizes comprehensive training and research under world-renowned faculty in a state-of-the-art environment. The Internal Medicine Residency Program includes a primary care track, developing culturally competent physicians through diverse clinical experiences across the University Teaching Service, subspecialty rotations, ICU and ambulatory clinics.

Training features intensive orientation boot camps, high-volume outpatient care that reduces readmissions and strong partnerships with Texas A&M's Engineering Medicine Program. With a $3.5 million Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board grant, we're expanding our program from 51 to 66 residents over three years.

Houston Methodist The Woodlands Hospital also offers an ACGME-accredited Internal Medicine Residency Program. Residents rotate through a variety of core and elective rotations in the outpatient and inpatient setting and participate in a longitudinal continuity clinic.

Key educational components in the division include The Ambulatory Curriculum On (TACO) Tuesday initiative focusing on leadership and quality improvement, grand rounds, morning reports and resident-led research projects.

EnMed: From Conception to Commencement
The revolutionary EnMed program partners Houston Methodist with Texas A&M University to transform health care through interdisciplinary translational research, medical technology development, and the training and development of “Physicianeers.”
