About Dr. Mehmet Hakan Akay
I pursue perfection, through simplicity, in my life and as the surgical director of Advanced Heart Failure at Houston Methodist Hospital. I am deeply committed to taking care of all of my patients.
Dr. Mehmet Hakan Akay earned his medical degree at University of Istanbul, Cerrahpasa Medical School in Turkey. Upon completing cardiovascular surgery training in Istanbul, he obtained his Turkish board certification. He then pursued additional specialty training in US, first with an International cardiovascular surgery fellowship at Texas Heart Institute followed by a congenital heart surgery fellowship at Texas Children’s Hospital. Dr. Akay decided to pursue a Cardiovascular surgery career in the United States, so he completed general surgery residency at Baylor College of Medicine in the Michael E. DeBakey Department of Surgery. This was followed by a Cardiothoracic Surgery residency at Texas Heart Institute under Dr. Denton Cooley and a Heart Transplant and Mechanical Circulatory Support fellowship at the Texas Heart Institute with Dr. O.H. Frazier.
Dr. Akay is board certified in American Board of Surgery as well as American Board of Thoracic Surgery. He has practiced cardiac surgery since 1992. His clinical interests are advanced heart failure, adult complex cardiac surgery, cardiopulmonary transplantation and mechanical circulatory support, minimally invasive cardiac surgery and arrhythmia surgery. He was professor of surgery at McGovern Medical School in Houston and affiliated with the Memorial Hermann Heart & Vascular Institute-Texas Medical Center. Dr. Akay is an active member of professional organizations, including the American Board of Surgery, American Board of Thoracic Surgery, ASAIO, ISHLT, Society of Thoracic Surgeons, and the Turkish Cardiovascular Society. He has numerous publications in peer reviewed journals and sits editorial board of journals as well. He has been an invited lecturer and moderator for national and international cardiac surgery meetings.
When not caring for his patients, Dr. Akay enjoys watching soccer and travelling especially visiting Turkey with his wife, two daughters and son.
