If you travel on I-10 and Barker Cypress through the Energy Corridor, you may notice that flamingos have landed at Houston Methodist West Hospital. In honor of breast cancer awareness month, flamingos will cover the green areas of the hospital grounds and pink lights will shine at night during the month of October.

“Houston Methodist West Hospital is committed to educating our community on the importance of breast care,” said Kim Collins, director of the Houston Methodist Breast Care Center at West. “We hope that our awareness efforts will prompt women in our area to be proactive and schedule their mammogram screenings.”

According to the American Cancer Society, breast cancer is the most common form of cancer, likely to affect one in eight women. Survival rates continue to improve steadily each year thanks to early detection and advanced treatment.

At Houston Methodist West, board-certified doctors and a comprehensive breast care team offer resources and screenings for early cancer detection including 3-D mammograms, ultrasounds and breast MRIs.

“We also offer genetic testing and counseling, patient navigation and have a High-Risk Program that offers intensive screenings and medications to prevent and reduce the risk of breast cancer for eligible patients,” said Collins.

This year, Houston Methodist West is partnering with LaCenterra at Cinco Ranch by hosting “A Night of Positively Pink,” a breast cancer awareness celebration. At this event, attendees will have the opportunity to meet the women’s health specialists, receive breast health information, enjoy live music by Shockwave Band, and receive giveaways and snacks including pink cotton candy, compliments of Berripop Frozen Yogurt. A Night of Positively Pink is on Friday, Oct. 21 from 6-9 p.m. at LaCenterra at Cinco Ranch Courtyard, located at 23501 Cinco Ranch Blvd. in Katy.
