Houston Methodist St. John Hospital’s Food and Nutrition Services team took home the first-place trophy at the annual Clear Lake Chamber of Commerce Epicurean Evening, held Thursday, Feb. 9, at Space Center Houston.

The hospital’s team captured the top honor with its samplings of bacon-wrapped quail, risotto and Frappuccino “shots.” It was Houston Methodist St. John Hospital’s first time to participate in the fun event. Entrants were judged on presentation of food, creativity of booth and overall showmanship.

“We were excited to participate and thrilled to win,” said Chuck Whitley, Director of Food and Nutrition Services. “Our team works hard every day preparing healthy, delicious meals for patients, visitors and staff, and the Epicurean Evening gave us a chance to show off a little.”

One of the highlights of the Houston Methodist St. John Hospital booth was the appearance of the “Head Waiter” – a sight gag that featured employee Danielle Lawson with her head under a serving dish!

“We might have startled some people, but it certainly made a lasting impression,” said Whitley.

More than 40 establishments – including some of the Bay Area’s top restaurants – took part in this year’s event, titled “A Taste of Space.” Guests were able to walk from booth to booth at their leisure, sampling a variety of cooking styles and dishes while enjoying live music.

“We had a great time meeting all our neighbors and serving up some ‘out of this world’ treats,” said Whitley. “Everyone is invited to dine at Houston Methodist St. John Hospital’s Three Sisters Café to sample the tasty menu and dispel old myths about ‘hospital food’!”
