Houston Methodist's Ferrari receives honorary degree
The University of St. Thomas will present an honorary doctorate to Mauro Ferrari, Ph.D., president and CEO of Houston Methodist Research Institute, during its 2017 commencement.
Ferrari was instrumental in the establishment of the university’s Master in Clinical Translation Management Program, a partnership between UST and HMRI. The university will grant degrees to the first graduates of this master program on Saturday, May 20, at NRG Arena. During the commencement, Ferrari will receive a Doctor of Letters Honoris Causa, as well as Cardinal Timothy Dolan, archbishop of New York.
As the leader of the Houston Methodist Research Institute, Ferrari oversees all research and education programs. The HMRI houses more than 800 clinical protocols.
He has published more than 500 research papers and books, and is the inventor of 30 issued patents in the United States and Europe. Throughout his academic career, he has supervised trainees and students who have gone on to senior faculty positions at Oxford, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), University of California Berkeley, University of California San Francisco, Duke University, University of Washington, and Ohio State University. Ferrari's degrees are in Mathematics (Padova, Italy), and Mechanical Engineering (M.S., & Ph.D., U.C. Berkeley).
Ferrari is a Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, American Academy for the Advancement of Science, and American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering. He holds several national and international awards, including the Blaise Pascal Medal in Biomedical Engineering - European Academy of Sciences, the ETH Zürich Stodola Medal, and the Founders Award - Controlled Release Society. He is also a member of the National Academy of Sciences of Italy and the European Academy of Science.
He is the Ernest Cockrell Jr. Presidential Distinguished Chair at HMRI, and he is director of the Houston Methodist Institute for Academic Medicine.
Ferrari presented the 2014 Archbishop J. Michael Miller Lecture at UST and served on the board of the UST Strategic Planning Committee since 2015.
