Houston Methodist San Jacinto Hospital joined a select group of health care institutions when officials were notified by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) on July 20 that the Baytown hospital was granted Magnet® recognition for nursing excellence.

There are only 441 hospitals in the world (including 33 in Texas) that have achieved Magnet recognition status, and just seven percent of hospitals in the U.S. have received this honor.
“This recognition is a tribute to each and every one of our team members who have dedicated themselves to our patients and their families,” said Becky Chalupa, Houston Methodist San Jacinto Hospital Chief Nursing Officer. “I would like to recognize the contributions of our Magnet Program Director, Kathy Arthurs, and would also like to thank our Magnet Steering Team and our Magnet Champions as well for all of their assistance along the way.”

The ANCC announced the achievement after Houston Methodist San Jacinto demonstrated it met or exceeded standards in the areas of nursing administration, education, clinical practice, research and quality. This is the highest level of recognition a hospital can receive from the ANCC for excellence in nursing services.

“Magnet recognition shows that our patients can count on our nurses to provide them with the very best care,” said Houston Methodist San Jacinto Hospital CEO David Bernard. “It is also important to our hospital because it helps us attract and retain top talent, improve safety, patient care and satisfaction and foster a collaborative culture. I am extremely proud of our nurses, nursing leadership, physicians, board of trustees, interprofessionals, our community and everyone who worked incredibly hard throughout our Journey to Magnet Excellence to earn this recognition that further demonstrates our commitment to providing unparalleled safety, quality, service and innovation to our patients.”

Studies show that due to nursing’s sense of autonomy and its professional relationships with physicians and other team members, hospitals that have achieved Magnet recognition have lower mortality rates and higher patient satisfaction compared to hospitals lacking this recognition.

According to the ANCC, the Magnet Recognition Program spotlights the management philosophy and practices of nursing services; adherence to standards for improving the quality of patient care; leadership of the chief nurse executive in supporting professional practice and continued superior performance of nursing personnel; and attention to the cultural and ethnic diversity of patients and their families.

“Magnet recognition showcases the excellent work taking place at Houston Methodist San Jacinto Hospital and the many ways our incredible nurses and interprofessionals are supported in their practice,” Chalupa said.
