Houston Methodist Weight Management Center ‘Now Open’ in The Woodlands
Residents of The Woodlands and Montgomery County now have comprehensive weight loss options close to home with the opening of Houston Methodist Weight Management Center at The Woodlands.
For more than 30 years, Houston Methodist Weight Management Center has led the way in helping people achieve weight loss with safe, long-term solutions. The center on the Houston Methodist The Woodlands campus will provide non-surgical opportunities including moderate and rapid weight loss programs.
“Our moderate weight loss program is offered to people who need to lose five to ten percent of their baseline weight, which is typically 20 to 30 pounds,” said Dr. Peter Jones, medical director of Houston Methodist Weight Management Center. “We use high protein/low carb meal replacements along with calorie controlled meal selections recommended by our dietitians. We also help the patient incorporate physical activities into the plan.”
Anyone needing to lose more than 10 percent of their baseline weight or has a Body Mass Index (BMI) greater than 30 is a candidate for the rapid weight loss program.
“This is a three phase program where people go on a rapid weight loss beverage plan to achieve a reasonable goal weight, and then we incorporate food back into their diet, followed by a maintenance program,” said Jones.
For patients who stay on the program for more than a year, the average weight loss is 86 pounds and 27 percent loss of their body weight. Jones said getting the weight off is easy; keeping it off is more difficult. This is where his team provides an even greater benefit to the patient.
“Patients must figure out how to lead a new lifestyle and develop a new self-care plan. We focus on preparing the person for that long-term exit strategy,” said Jones.
Houston Methodist’s all-encompassing care approach comprises a multidisciplinary team of doctors, nurses, registered dietitians, licensed clinical social workers and exercise physiologists.
“It has to be a team approach. Patients have many needs when reorganizing their personal health. We can give them instructions but they need people who understand the emotional aspects that come with making these changes,” said Jones.
No matter which weight loss option patients are considering, Jones encourages them not to delay their decision to get the extra weight off.
The benefits of weight loss include:
• Reducing the risk factors for some diseases, particularly heart disease and cancer
• Lower blood pressure, lower blood sugar and improved cholesterol levels
• Improved mobility, physical endurance and self-esteem
The weight management center will offer bariatric surgery in the future as well as support groups for bariatric and diabetes patients.
Houston Methodist Weight Management Center at The Woodlands offers free orientation sessions to answer any questions you may have regarding the program and to help you decide which program is right for you.
