William Zoghbi, M.D., has been named chair of the department of cardiology in the Houston Methodist DeBakey Heart & Vascular Center. 

Zoghbi has served as the president of both the American College of Cardiology and the American Society of Echocardiography, and as a member of the board of the World Heart Federation. 

“I am honored and very excited to lead the Department of Cardiology at this juncture,” Zoghbi said. “We have a tremendous opportunity to grow and continue leading medicine, providing the most comprehensive cardiovascular care to patients, innovating in research, and training the future generations of cardiologists.”

Zoghbi has been an innovator during his 30 year clinical and academic career, developing novel non-invasive techniques to evaluate valvular disorders and cardiac function. He also chaired national guidelines for the evaluation of valvular heart disease. 

“Dr. Zoghbi has been a recognized leader throughout his career in cardiology, and we are privileged to have him in a leadership position at Houston Methodist,” said Marc L. Boom, M.D., president and CEO of Houston Methodist. “He is always looking for new ways to educate others around him and improve the patient experience. I believe he will take the department to new heights.”

The Houston Methodist DeBakey Heart & Vascular Center is ranked No. 21 in the country by U.S. News & World Report.

“Dr. Zoghbi is one of the top cardiologists in the world in the field of cardiovascular imaging,” said Alan Lumsden, M.D., chief of cardiovascular surgery at Houston Methodist DeBakey Heart & Vascular Center. “He is a brilliant mind and innovator and is the perfect person to lead the department into the future.” 

Zoghbi, who founded the Cardiovascular Imaging Institute at Houston Methodist, has trained more than 100 cardiology fellows in advanced cardiovascular imaging. He has also authored more than 300 original publications and lectured to audiences all around the world. He is currently the William L. Winters Endowed Chair in CV Imaging and the Elkins Family Distinguished Chair in Cardiac Health, both under the Houston Methodist DeBakey Heart & Vascular Center.
