Superior Gluteal Artery Perforator Flap (SGAP Flap)

Houston Methodist reconstructive surgeons bring the most advanced treatments to patients in need of breast reconstruction. For patients without adequate excess abdominal or tummy tissue, surgeons utilize the SGAP flap, or the superior gluteal artery perforator flap (buttocks), to reconstruct the breast.

During the SGAP flap procedure, surgeons harvest tissue and blood vessels from the top part of the buttock without injury to the underlying gluteal muscles. The harvested tissue is transplanted to the breast and a microscope is used to connect the blood vessels supplying this tissue to those at the mastectomy site. Surgeons perform a slight buttock lift as part of this procedure, making a fine incision in the donor area.

Key Benefits
The following are benefits to the SGAP flap procedure:
  • Soft reconstruction
  • Complete preservation of gluteal muscles
  • Minimally invasive
  • Potential for restoration of sensation
  • Less recovery time
  • Less pain
  • No foreign material
  • Full return to normal activity
