Curriculum

All positions in our program are categorical in nature, encompassing the entire four years of your training.

  • Clinical Base Year

As required by the ACGME, your first year of training will provide you with a base of fundamental clinical skills to prepare you for your clinical anesthesia training.

Rotations during the first year are directed by the Department of Internal Medicine, and all are housed at the Houston Methodist Hospital. They include four months of inpatient ward service, pulmonology, renal, and cardiology in patient consult service, two months of critical care, emergency medicine, otolaryngology, and one month of anesthesia.

  • Clinical Anesthesia Training

    CA-1

Your first year of anesthesia training begins with a month paired one to one with an attending anesthesiologist. The year will include six months in the main ORs, developing skills in delivery of general anesthesia. In the latter half of the year, you will get your first specialty rotations in obstetric anesthesia and neuroanesthesia. The balance of the year will be filled with another month of ICU and introductions to acute pain management, regional anesthesia, and pre and post anesthesia care.

    CA-2

The second year of anesthesia training focuses on subspecialty anesthesia. There are four additional months in the main ORs, where you will focus on more challenging cases and developing more independence in delivery of care. Specialty rotations during the year include; two months of pediatric anesthesia, two months of cardiothoracic, trauma, chronic pain, and additional rotations in obstetric anesthesia and neuroanesthesia.

    CA-3

Your final year of training provides fixability to meet your specific goals, with up to three months of elective time to dive deeper into anesthesia specialties of your choosing or to devote to dedicated research time. Required rotations during the year include a fourth month of ICU, and one month on the liver transplant service. The balance of the year you will have additional opportunities to obstetric, cardiothoracic, pediatric, and three months in the main ORs.

  • Educational Series

Education will be delivered monthly, with each class meeting independently day per month for a full day of experiences. These days are generally organized with four flipped classroom sessions in the morning, and more interactive sessions in the afternoon. Residents have no clinical responsibilities on educational days. Each class will have quarterly sessions in the simulation center.

In addition the monthly educational days conferences will be held weekly on Wednesday morning (grand rounds, morbidity and mortality conference, case presentations, and program development). Residents in their first year of clinical anesthesia training will have additional afternoon conferences reinforcing basics of anesthesia, procedural skills training, and case conferences.
