Are Boots Really Made for Walkin'? Here's What to Know Before Wearing Them All Day
Feb. 24, 2026 - Katie McCallumRodeo season means great entertainment, good music, delicious food — and, of course, cowboy boots. But since it can also mean long days on your feet, what should you keep in mind before pulling on your favorite pair?
According to Dr. Andrew Friedmann, an orthopedic surgeon at Houston Methodist, it all starts with fit.
“Cowboys have been wearing boots forever,” he says. "That said, some of today's more fashionable or formal boots present some challenges for your feet — especially if you're wearing boots for a long period of time or your feet aren't used to them."
Sidestepping these challenges just takes a little awareness, and maybe a bit of planning. With Dr. Friedmann's tips in mind, you'll be prepared to wear your boots all rodeo season long.
The toe box matters more than you think
“Some boots can be pretty narrow at the toe," says Dr. Friedmann. "That creates pressure in the area, and can cause soreness and maybe even swelling by the end of a long day of walking, standing and navigating crowds."
A sharper, smaller toe box is especially common for dressier boots. If your favorite boots are tighter or more structured, plan accordingly. You might choose to wear them for shorter periods or alternate with a pair that has a wider toe box.
Rotate your boots to give your feet a break
If you’re attending the rodeo multiple days in a row, you don’t have to wear the same style every time.
“If you have a couple of pairs of boots, try to wear a different style one day, then a different style the next,” Dr. Friedmann suggests. "Just to give your feet a different view of boots.”
Switching styles can change pressure points and reduce repetitive stress on the same areas of your feet — an easy way to stay comfortable without giving up boots altogether.
For people who worry that frequent boot‑wearing might cause long‑term damage, Dr. Friedmann offers reassurance: "You’re not going to do any long‑lasting damage to your feet by wearing them," he says.
In other words: weeks of wearing boots won’t ruin your feet. Your body is more resilient than you think — especially if you listen to it.
How to take care of your feet after a long day in boots
Even if your boots fit well, long days in any shoes can leave your feet tired or even swollen — especially if you walked farther or stood longer than is usual for you.
Dr. Friedmann recommends a few simple habits once you’re home, including:
Stretching the Achilles tendon
Doing range of motion exercises for your feet
Switching to tennis shoes
Elevating your feet if they're swollen
And he's quick to add, “I love boots. I wear them, especially when I go to the rodeo."
The takeaway? Enjoy the season, wear the boots you love and pay attention to how your feet feel. With the right fit, a little variety and some end‑of‑day care, you can look the part and stay comfortable all rodeo season long.
