Are you considering breast reconstruction after a mastectomy? In this video, Dr. Aldona J. Spiegel, a breast surgeon at Houston Methodist, shares how an early consultation with a specialist in breast restoration surgery can help allay many fears or concerns about your surgery.
"The goal of reconstructive surgery is to reshape the breast as close to the original as possible," says Dr. Spiegel. "We also want to achieve symmetry between the breasts."
Your consultation will start with a thorough medical history and physical exam. From there, your surgeon will explain the differences between a breast implant versus a flap procedure that uses your own tissue, usually from the abdomen, to rebuild the breast. You'll also talk about what to expect during your recovery period.
After your initial consultation, you'll meet with your surgeon again (in person or via video) to finalize your surgical plan. Together, you and your surgeon will determine which type of procedure fits you best, based on your medical history, the type of mastectomy you undergo and your personal preferences.
"This can be quite a complex process, so we want you to have as much information as you need to make an informed decision," Dr. Spiegel says. "We want to see every patient regain their femininity in a way that enhances their positive physical and mental vitality."
