What Can Breast Cancer Genetic Testing Tell You?

June 6, 2025

What can genetic testing tell you about your risk of breast cancer? In the video Q&A above, breast oncologist Dr. Polly Niravath explains how it works, who is a candidate and what to expect.

"Genetic testing gives us highly accurate data about your risk of getting breast cancer in the future — and how we might prevent it," Dr. Niravath says.

Here are five facts about breast cancer genetic screening that may surprise you:

  • Testing is non-invasive: It involves only a simple blood draw or a saliva sample, with results in about four weeks.
  • Screening covers other types of cancer: About 5-10% of breast cancers have a genetic link. Your panel may include up to 50 different genes, looking for susceptibility to ovarian, colon, pancreatic and other cancers at the same time.
  • Results can help you prevent cancer: Your provider might recommend more frequent mammograms, a breast ultrasound or an MRI. In some cases, medications may be recommended to help reduce the risk of some breast cancers by as much as 50%. Women at the highest risk may choose a preventive mastectomy.
  • The age recommendation is mid-20s: This is when a genetic mutation begins to increase the risk of cancer.
  • It can benefit your loved ones: Your results may lead to preventing many cancers within your family.

"Knowing your risk increases our arsenal of tools to keep you healthy," says Dr. Niravath. "Talk to your doctor about genetic testing if you have a family history of breast cancer or other risk factors."
