Dr. Stephen Incavo Showcases a New Repair Technique for Hip Abductor Tendon Tears

Repairing hip abductor tendons using a bone trough approach can relieve pain and support recovery of normal walking and function.

A new repair technique for hip abductor tendon tears employs a longitudinal bone trough in the greater trochanter. This allows for reconstitution of the abductor tendon and is showing improved outcomes compared with the traditional repair using suture anchors or transosseous bone tunnels.

We also propose a new classification system for abductor tendon tears that will help to better describe tear types anatomically and thereby guide appropriate surgical interventions based on these types. We found that outcomes after surgical treatment of abductor tendon tears without avulsion are superior to those after repairs of abductor tendon avulsions. This an important distinction compared with previous literature on abductor tendon repairs.
