Message from the Chair
Randolph H. Steadman, MD, MS
Professor and Chair, Department of Anesthesiology & Critical Care
Welcome to the Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care! Houston Methodist Hospital is a major academic medical center which has trained Anesthesiology residents for over a decade. Now, it’s finally time to start our own program. Most days we staff 75-80 anesthetizing locations and coordinate five Critical Care Units through our Center for Critical Care. Our annual operative volume in cardiovascular surgery, thoracic surgery, neurosurgery, as well as other surgical subspecialties rivals that of other academic centers. Houston Methodist is the number one transplant center in Texas, leading the way in cardiac, lung, liver and kidney transplantation. Houston Methodist Hospital is ranked the #1 Hospital in Texas and in the top 20 hospitals nationally by US News and World Report.
Houston Methodist prides itself on leading medicine, providing compassionate and respectful care, and maintaining an emphasis on quality and patient safety. The Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care works closely with institutional leadership in all of these areas. Additionally, the department emphasizes faculty and resident development in a number of domains, including personal well-being and resiliency, innovative educational strategies, research methodology and statistics, and the creation of enduring scholarly works.
We value experiential education, utilizing simulation-based training, post-encounter debriefing, hands-on workshops, and teams-based learning. As a learning institution, we expect to learn from you by listening to you and understanding your needs. An educational steering committee, comprised of resident representatives from each year, will meet regularly with program leadership. We understand that residency is a busy yet rewarding time in one’s professional development. Our goal is to facilitate the experience by creating a supportive community that maximizes your focus on building your professional career.
I encourage you to take a close look at our program, which focuses on preparing you to meet your goals, whether that means a subspecialty fellowship, or a career in private practice or academics.
Message from the Program Director
Scott Lindberg, MD
Program Director, Anesthesiology Residency
Welcome to the anesthesia residency program at Houston Methodist Hospital. Our goal is to train outstanding clinical anesthesiologists who are recognized as leaders in patient safety and more broadly, within their community.
While we are a newly accredited program, we are not new to training residents. Houston Methodist has established residencies in twelve disciplines and more than thirty fellowship programs. Nor are we new to training anesthesiologists: The Department of Anesthesiology currently hosts rotations in neurosurgical, cardiothoracic, regional and transplant anesthesia for three affiliated residency programs.
Our program is unique in its blending of private practice and a more traditional academic department. Our large and diverse faculty, is formed out of a long-standing collaboration between Houston Methodist Hospital and US Anesthesia Partners, one of the largest anesthesia groups in the country. A mix of traditional academic and private practice experiences will prepare our residents to appreciate – and excel in - any practice environment.
The bulk of your training will occur at Houston Methodist Hospital, ranked the number 1 hospital in Texas by US News and World reports. It is the flagship hospital of the Methodist System, a high volume quaternary care center with over 70 anesthetizing sites providing care. Additional rotations will be hosted by Memorial Hermann Hospital, one of the largest trauma centers in the United States.
As the program director my mission is to deliver an excellent educational curriculum, clinical experiences second to none, all while ensuring an environment conducive to your growth and well-being. I have been practicing at Houston Methodist for sixteen years. In that time, I have served in many roles, most recently as the director of liver transplant anesthesia. Outside of my clinical roles my passion is patient safety and quality improvement, having served on committees at the hospital, and on the state and national level.
I am looking for residents who are curious, skeptical, and open minded, and who display empathy and humility.
Through our commitment to unparalleled safety, quality, service, and innovation, we are confident that you will find Houston Methodist Anesthesiology to be an exceptional choice for residency training.

Clinical Anesthesia Training
CA-1: Your first year of anesthesia training begins with a month paired one to one with an attending anesthesiologist. The year will include six months in the main ORs, developing skills in delivery of general anesthesia. In the latter half of the year, you will get your first specialty rotations in obstetric anesthesia and neuroanesthesia. The balance of the year will be filled with another month of ICU and introductions to acute pain management, regional anesthesia, and pre and post anesthesia care.
CA-2: The second year of anesthesia training focuses on subspecialty anesthesia. There are four additional months in the main ORs, where you will focus on more challenging cases and developing more independence in delivery of care. Specialty rotations during the year include; two months of pediatric anesthesia, two months of cardiothoracic, trauma, chronic pain, and additional rotations in obstetric anesthesia and neuroanesthesia.
CA-3: Your final year of training provides fixability to meet your specific goals, with up to three months of elective time to dive deeper into anesthesia specialties of your choosing or to devote to dedicated research time. Required rotations during the year include a fourth month of ICU, and one month on the liver transplant service. The balance of the year you will have additional opportunities to obstetric, cardiothoracic, pediatric, and three months in the main ORs.

Educational Series
Education will be delivered monthly, with each class meeting independently day per month for a full day of experiences. These days are generally organized with four flipped classroom sessions in the morning, and more interactive sessions in the afternoon. Residents have no clinical responsibilities on educational days. Each class will have quarterly sessions in the simulation center.
In addition the monthly educational days conferences will be held weekly on Wednesday morning (grand rounds, morbidity and mortality conference, case presentations, and program development). Residents in their first year of clinical anesthesia training will have additional afternoon conferences reinforcing basics of anesthesia, procedural skills training, and case conferences.
