Fields Rosenberg Summer Surgical Fellowship
The Fields Rosenberg Summer Surgical Fellowship, sponsored by Dr. Wade Rosenberg (pictured beside) from the Department of Surgery, and led by Dr. Jeffrey Friedman, offers second, third, and fourth-year undergraduates an outstanding physician shadowing experience.
Selected participants embark on a 10-week paid internship, receiving direct mentorship from surgeons specializing in areas such as General Surgery, Neurosurgery, Urology, Plastic Surgery, Cardiovascular Surgery, and other surgical fields. Throughout the summer program, participants attend didactic lectures and career and professional development seminars tailored specifically for undergraduates. At the conclusion of the program, interns present an oral presentation of their shadowing experience. The Fields Rosenberg Summer Surgical Fellowship boasts a near-100% acceptance rate into medical school. Fellows are provided a $6,000 stipend for participating.

Reflections from Our 2025 Fields Rosenberg Surgical Fellows
As 2025 Fields Rosenberg Surgical Fellows, this summer gave us a rare and invaluable window into the world of academic surgery. We had the opportunity to observe surgical procedures, attend clinical rounds, and engage in research that deepened our understanding of surgical outcomes, innovation, and patient-centered care.
The experience challenged us to think differently—not just as students, but as future physicians. We learned that surgery is not only a technical discipline but also a calling that demands precision, empathy, and critical thinking. Watching surgeons navigate complex decisions in real time helped us appreciate the depth of knowledge and responsibility the field requires.
Our mentors went beyond teaching—they invested in us. Through their guidance and support, we developed a stronger sense of purpose and a clearer view of what it means to lead in medicine.
We leave this fellowship inspired and grateful, with a deeper respect for the field of surgery and a commitment to carrying forward the values of curiosity, excellence, and compassion. Being part of the Fields Rosenberg Surgical Fellowship has been an honor, and we’re proud to contribute to its growing legacy.”
