Program Mission

The Program's mission is to train physicians to provide high-quality, evidence based, cost-effective, patient centric health care to our patients and community. The program also strives to provide full spectrum training in family medicine along with training for research, advocacy, and quality improvement such that our future physicians can deliberately make a difference in the future of healthcare and community at large.

Curriculum

The Houston Methodist Sugar Land Family Medicine Residency Program provides a comprehensive, unopposed, full-spectrum training experience that prepares residents to care for patients across all stages of life. Residents gain progressive responsibility through continuity ambulatory practice, inpatient medicine, obstetrics, women's health, pediatrics, behavioral health, emergency medicine, critical care, geriatrics and elective experiences, developing the skills needed for independent practice in diverse clinical settings.

• 3 year residency (post medical school graduation)

• Nursery, NICU, Outpatient Pediatrics, Pediatric Electives, Pediatric ER, Pediatric Inpatient, Continuity clinic
• Inpatient Medicine – 6 months wards
• ICU training – 2 months

• Early application is encouraged. Applications are accepted and reviewed only through ERAS.
• Application deadline: December 1
• Minimum of three (3) letters of recommendation, with at least one (1) letter from a primary care physician.
• U.S. Citizens and Permanent Residents only. We are currently unable to sponsor visas.
• For International Medical Graduates (IMGs), ECFMG certification is required and USMLE Step 3 completion is preferred. IMGs must have a minimum of three (3) months of U.S. clinical experience within the past two (2) years.
• We do not accept applicants with any prior GME training in the United States.
• Applicants must have graduated from medical school within three (3) years at the time of application submission.
• Applicants must have successfully completed USMLE Step 1 and Step 2 and/or COMLEX Level 1 and Level 2 by the NRMP rank list certification deadline.

• Drug and Tobacco Screening- Job seekers will be tested for nicotine and drug usage during the post-offer physical. If a job seeker tests positive for nicotine use, including nicotine gum and patches, the offer will be rescinded, and individuals will be given the opportunity to participate in a free Houston Methodist-provided tobacco cessation program. Job seekers wishing to reapply after testing positive for nicotine may do so 90 days after the date the initial offer was rescinded. If the job seeker tests positive for drug use, the offer will be rescinded. Job seekers wishing to reapply after the drug screening is positive may do so one year after the date the initial offer was rescinded.
