The Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Health at Houston Methodist offers a postdoctoral fellowship program that is aimed at developing advanced professional skill within an academic medical setting. Fellows will gain specialized experience in psychotherapy, psychological assessment, interprofessional collaboration and consultation, and research within a leading, nationally-ranked hospital system. The seven competencies the program seeks to develop are: (1) Integration of Science and Practice, (2) Ethical & Legal Standards, (3) Individual and Cultural Diversity, (4) Professional Values and Attitudes, (5) Communication and Interpersonal Skills, (6) Intervention, and (7) Psychological Assessment.
During the training year, fellows will work on interprofessional teams and have the chance to learn from other mental health professionals to improve patient care. The Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Health serves people with diverse patient characteristics, including age, ability, ethnicity, race, culture, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, religion, socioeconomic, and psychiatric status. The training staff is composed of experienced psychologists with backgrounds in treating patients across the spectrum of psychiatric acuity.
The fellowship is composed of two tracks: (1) Outpatient Track, and (2) Partial Hospitalization/Therapeutic Assessment Track.
Fellows in the Outpatient Track provide services within the department's Emotional Health and Well-Being Clinic (EHWC). This clinic serves the mental health needs of Houston Methodist employees, many of whom are frontline healthcare workers, and their dependents, a population of over 55,000 in the greater Houston metropolitan area.
The Partial Hospitalization / Therapeutic Assessment track is designed to facilitate specialization in working with patients who present with difficult-to-treat psychiatric conditions, psychosis, personality disorders, complex trauma, and/or co-occurring medical-psychiatric illness. The fellow will primarily train in Houston Methodist's Complexity Clinic, a private pay clinic that draws patients nationally and internationally for an award-winning comprehensive medical-psychiatric-psychological assessment, called the Therapeutic Assessment (TA), and a team-based partial hospitalization program (PHP).
In addition to high quality supervision, the training experience includes regular psychiatry grand rounds and didactics on a variety of topics relevant to professional practice within an academic medical setting. Fellows meet regularly for case conference and specialized training in advance acceptance and commitment therapy skills. Fellows will also have opportunities to contribute to ongoing research initiatives in the department.
At the conclusion of the fellowship, the fellow will be better prepared for independent practice and will have met requirements for licensure within the state of Texas.
