About Our Fellowship
Rotations
The Clinical Neurophysiology Fellowship Program at Houston Methodist Stanley H. Appel Department of Neurology encompasses all salient aspects of clinical neurophysiology, including EMG, Nerve Conduction, EEG, Sleep, Evoked Potentials, Intra-Operative Monitoring, and other clinically relevant testing.
We perform over 2,000 EMG studies a year. Fellows are exposed to a wide variety of clinical neuromuscular diseases, multiple clinical/academic conferences and interpretation of muscle biopsies, as well as participating in clinics specializing in myasthenia gravis, myotonic disorders, muscular dystrophy, and motor neuron disease.
A core component of the Neurophysiology Laboratory, where we perform 3,500 EEGs (accredited by ABRET, American Board of Registration of Electroencephalographic and Evoked Potential Technologists), 400 EPs and 350 intra-operative assessments, is the Comprehensive Epilepsy Program. This program, which the National Association of Epilepsy Centers designates as Level 4, consists of a multidisciplinary team with clinicians and researchers from neurology, neurosurgery, neuropsychology, neuroradiology, nuclear medicine, neuropathology, and psychiatry. The fellow will gain exposure to all aspects of the epilepsy surgery program, including interpretation of video EEG monitoring studies, electrocorticography, functional cortical mapping, WADA testing and the inpatient and outpatient evaluation of patients with epilepsy.
Another aspect of the fellowship is rotation in Sleep Medicine. The Sleep Disorders Center consists of a 10 bed AASM (American Academy of Sleep Medicine) accredited laboratory. This program consists of a multidisciplinary team with members from neurology, pulmonary medicine, ENT, oral maxillofacial surgery, cardiology, psychology, and psychiatry. The rotation includes interpretation of sleep studies and evaluation of patients in the sleep disorders clinic.
We present an outstanding opportunity for those interested in clinical neurophysiology, neuromuscular disease, and epilepsy.

Rotations
Following the fellowship year, individuals will have met criteria to take the examination for Certification in the Subspecialty of Clinical Neurophysiology, offered trough the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. Fellows will have mastered skills in clinical neurophysiology. During the year of fellowship training, we encourage participants to engage in a research project and present their findings at one of the national meetings.
EMG Rotation (5 Months)
Our EMG Laboratory is extremely busy, assessing a high volume of patients with a wide range of multiple neuromuscular and various clinical disorders. Currently, we assess over 2,000 patients per year. This experience highlights the fellow learning skills in nerve conduction assessment and intramuscular recordings, all in the setting of didactic lectures and clinical exposure. Fellows have the opportunity to participate in clinics individually specifically focused upon amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), myotonic dystrophy, muscular dystrophy, and myasthenia gravis.
Fellows will learn basic techniques of NCV assessment, including motor conductions, sensory responses, F Waves, H Reflex Latencies, repetitive stimulations, and single fiber assessments. They will learn assessment of intramuscular recordings, including fibrillations, waveforms, patterns of recruitment, and patterns of disease.
EEG Rotation
This includes a four-month rotation in the Clinical Neurophysiology/EEG lab at Houston Methodist Hospital and a one-month rotation in Pediatric EEG/Epilepsy at Memorial Hermann Hospital. The EEG lab at Houston Methodist is accredited by ABRET (American Board of Registration of Electroencephalographic and Evoked Potential Technologists) and approximately 3500 EEG’s and 400 evoked potentials are performed annually. The epilepsy program is designated level 4 by the National Association of Epilepsy Centers and consists of a multidisciplinary team with clinicians and researchers from the Departments of Neurology, Neurosurgery, Neuroradiology, Psychiatry, Neuropsychology, Pathology and Nuclear Medicine.
Fellows rotate in the EEG, Evoked Potential Lab and in the Epilepsy Monitoring Unit. Fellows also see patients in the Outpatient Clinic, in addition to performing inpatient epilepsy consults. One moth is at Memorial Hermann Hospital, learning pediatric EEG and rotating in the Pediatric Epilepsy Monitoring Unit.
Sleep Rotation
There is a one-month rotation in the Sleep Clinic and Houston Methodist Sleep Disorders Center, a 10-bed AASM accredited sleep laboratory. Fellows interact with different team members of the Comprehensive Sleep Disorders Program, which includes faculty from specialties of Neurology, Pulmonary, Cardiology, Oral Maxillofacial Surgery, ENT, Psychiatry, and Psychology.

Eligibility and Application
Candidates are required to have successfully completed an accredited residency program in neurology before the start of the fellowship. Having completed the fellowship program, graduates will be clinically as well as academically credentialed, and well trained to sit for the examination offered by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. Vascular Neurology Fellowship is offering two positions annually through the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP). Applications must be submitted through ERAS (Electronic Residency Application Service). All candidates must be registered for the match with the National Residency Matching Program (NRMP). Applications are reviewed on a continuous basis and will be scheduled by invitation only.
All applicants must complete the ERAS application and include:
- Personal statement
- Three (3) letters of recommendation
- USMLE Transcript or COMLEX in lieu of USMLE for DO students
- ECFMG Status Report if applicable
