Genitourinary-Medical Kidney Pathology Fellowship

Houston Methodist Hospital Department of Pathology and Genomic Medicine in Houston, Texas, an affiliate of Weill Cornell Medical College and Texas A&M Medical College, offers an ACGME-accredited fellowship in genitourinary-medical kidney, for physicians who have completed pathology residency training and are interested in strengthening and specializing their skills in genitourinary-medical kidney pathology and related research. 

One one-year fellowship position is available every academic year under the directorship of Steven Shen, MD, PhD, and associate director Luan Truong, MD. The Houston Methodist Hospital GU-Medical Kidney Pathology Fellowship will provide comprehensive training and experience in the subspecialty area of genitourinary-medical kidney of anatomic pathology.
 
Houston Methodist Hospital is the primary teaching site for the GU-Medical Kidney Pathology Fellowship program and provides a vast experience for the fellow with a significant volume and variety of clinical experience. This program will provide a unique perspective by providing combined comprehensive training in both neoplastic and non-neoplastic aspects of the genitourinary organ system; an educational combination that equips trainees with a unique set of practice-based skills offering a distinct advantage over other existing training programs that require separate training in both areas. Most genitourinary fellowships do not offer any exposure to medical kidney pathology training, which is usually a stand-alone program. Our fellowship will give the trainee an outstanding experience in both of these areas under the tutelage of seven faculty members covering these subspecialties and a wide variety of over 6000 cases annually, including 900 medical kidney biopsies with excellent support in ancillary techniques such as electron microscopy and immunofluorescence studies.

Teaching at the microscope is supplemented with excellent departmental facilities and ample opportunities to present at a number of interdisciplinary weekly/monthly conferences enhancing the fellow’s collaborative interaction with other branches of clinical medicine and participation in multidisciplinary projects.

Requirements

Candidates must be board certified or board eligible in clinical pathology, anatomic/clinical pathology, or by other ABMS board. Candidates must be eligible for a Texas Medical Board (TMB) Physician-In-Training Permit (PIT) or hold a Texas Full Physician Medical licensure.
