Redefining Medical Education

Each year, Houston Methodist faculty educate more than 40,000 students, researchers and clinicians through a collaborative, team‑based model that reflects the operations of a top‑performing academic medical center.

Through our affiliation with Weill Cornell Medical College, the Houston Methodist Education Institute supports 88 graduate medical education (GME) programs and a community of more than 900 graduate students and postdoctoral trainees. In addition, master’s degree and PhD programs, as well as the pioneering EnMed “physicianeer” program in partnership with Texas A&M University, open doors to new approaches to diagnosis, prevention and treatment.

Benefactor support strengthens these and other systemwide education initiatives, including simulation training facilities, nursing scholarships and competitive NIH-funded T32 training grant programs.

GME, short for graduate medical education, is the requisite clinical education that follows on the heels of medical school graduation. It begins with a young doctor’s hospital residency to train in a specialty practice area, such as internal medicine, and may include an ensuing fellowship in a subspecialty. And it is in jeopardy.

EnMed is the nation’s first program designed to educate “physicianeers” — innovators who pair advanced clinical training with engineering expertise. Meet these young entrepreneurial minds as well as Craig Brown and Sue Smith, the program’s earliest and most dedicated champions.

These aren’t just educational opportunities; they are transformational experiences. They shape the way students think, the way they innovate and, ultimately, the way they will practice medicine and touch patients’ lives.
